Our sheep, rabbits, chickens and dog survived shut up in the barn over the last few days--but only due to our constant attention during the sub-zero temps here. Anyone got any old-school (or new-school) ideas on how to keep a barn above 32 degrees so water doesn't freeze? With hay in the loft, I'm uncomfortable with every form of heating device I've come across--and the florescent light we have in there even makes me uncomfortable. If I was at this farming thing full time, I'd try a trench right through the middle of the barn with 50' of concrete blocks buried side-by-side (holes facing each other) about a foot deep and have a fire going on one end of the blocks (20' away from the barn) during these below zero days--the gasifier concept. But no time for breaking the code on stuff like this, though. Ideas?

Either air-to-air or fluid-to-air heat exchanger. Plenty of options, where you could remotely have a boiler outside or in a secure room, or a sealed gas/oil fired exchanger heater. (gas style is usually exhausted through pvc pipe, to give you some idea how cool the exhaust temps are)

I think you're asking for the impossible, but Google 'hazardous location heater' and 'explosion proof heater' and see if you can find something to fit your bill.

My Grandad never heated his barn. True, he spent most of his days here in southern Oregon where the weather is more reasonable than other, less hospitable, parts of the country. He had several hay barns and an old milk barn (leftover from his dairy days) and one feed barn that was always available to the livestock. The cattle and horses kinda found their favorite places to go in the coldest weather and sometimes it was in the feed barn but mostly it was out wandering around wherever they wanted to go. I don't remember him ever loosing an animal to the winter weather.

Normal winter climate here is fairly wet, some snow, a week or four below freezing and the occasional week or two below zero.

I can understand where in populated areas this might be a concern. But to regulate the entire country to these standards is ridiculous! 90 days to comment to the EPA should be on the "to do" list for everyone of us.... Besides writing ALL of your local Congress reps on both sides of the isle...

They already do, on occasion. What's to say a permanent burn ban couldn't be put in place. It would be in the gov't's best interest to do so, since wood is a fuel resource they don't have any control over, nor tax revenue from.

Last year a neighbor got popped by the County Monkeys for having an unpermitted shelter (his home). When the owner asked how they knew about it the county ASSessor said we viewed it from an online satellite camera. He didn't get a warning from the county or the chance to get permits...they told him to take it down, asap. he had no choice. Mind ya, we live in the boonies, very rural and yet this stuff goes on here.

The trick is to build on wheels, make it "movable." ;)

I've though about building my home of two large trailer beds lines up next to each other and supported by piers. ;)

They won't ban wood stoves. They will keep tightening the regs until the only stoves that can be bought are out of the price range of the very people that need wood to keep their house warm.

I use google and bing maps to scout hunting areas. I have seen elk with both, to give an idea of the resolution that you can get now. At one point, when we lived in North Carolina, I could see myself in the yard digging an un-permitted electrical line to our shed.

We had and old one then in April of this year they upgraded to HD. Not happy. They got it while we had a big blue tarp over the floor just before we started stacking logs. Stands out like a beacon from the sky.

On Google Earth there's a sliding bar (bottom left I think) to go through a progression of time. The photos of my place date between 1994 and 2005. They may have upgraded the viewing but the photos of my place are still significantly outdated. Remember, rural Oregon is significantly technologically challenged.

Glad I bought mine last spring--but now that I have one I can see that anyone who can weld can easily build one that will last forever. Nothing much to it and FREE heat for me since I've got 101 acres of wooded land (2000' square) and several kids to help cut firewood. *No building codes either! Havent heard of pay services through Google Earth. But, I think you can pay Terraserver and other (expensive) services to get imagery.

In reality, besides large buckshot, I'd imagine an effective silent neutralizer would be something to jam the signal.

Anything strong enough to cover all frequencies at high enough levels would most certainly be illegal in the FCC eyes.

Barring that, if you disrupt the signal to a drone, the way the radios work now is that they will auto switch to a new frequency. So, you need something covering the entire spectrum and for long sustained times.

The only issue with jamming is some drones have built in "return to home" GPS when loss of radio or battery low.

Only then is when u reach for the shotgun.

Personally, I'd try to go the jamming route. Might pickup a new drone that you just repair the blades on.
