  1. Eliminating the jerks from class

    Only in retrospect do I realize that good professors develop mechanisms to eliminate jerks / a-holes / disruptions from class.

    One professor would say on day one, "I never give an A grade for this class. Never."
    I managed to negotiate that asap and eventually earned an A for the class.

    Another professor said, "Any student who is late to class more than twice will receive a fail grade. No exceptions."

  2. Jesuit Power

    When I attended college I followed my sister's good advice, "always make use of faculty hours, always talk to your professors outside of class."

    It led to a lot of interesting discussions and also better grades because familiarity, genuine interest, and also personality matters.
    It's the easiest, ethical way to 'hack' the system.

    Here's a story about one memorable visit.
