i got a few questions a few of which are probley good for class but will contribute to the open forum none the less.(unless it gets move to the other side)
#1 would/ could loggers give you a free load of logs and use it as a tax right off?
seems good in theory, there helping some one out and it could help them also. i dont know exactaly how right offfs work but it seems to me it could??
#2how do you hide the wall sockets and light switches?
igot some ideas and im sure theres alot aabout it on the flip side, but its been buggin me for a while so i thought id pass it on:) (fuel for thought)
#3 do you feel vibrations from stone quarry blasting/ railroad tracks less than a stick house.
i live about a half mile from two stone quarries and about .75 miles from rr tracks in the opposite direction.im in a full basement stick house.and elevation cant me more than 50 feet of difference between each. im thinkin its more of a foundation thing than anything else but the weight of the walls play some part in it.

if these questions are to touchy for the public side please dont answer them so it can stay here. i think threes safe.

1... The logger's tax incentive to give you free logs would be the same as his/her tax incentive to siphon fuel from his truck and give it to you.... Don't count on it.

2... The plugs and switches that are on interior walls are done conventionally. As for the wall switches and plugs, there are a number of solutions. A lot of folks put plugs in the floor. I will put mine between the logs in the chinking line. More about it in class and as you work things out in your head it will all make more sense.

3... The bigger the logs, the bigger the sound deadening. Less windows will make a difference, as in a stick house. Consider how much each of the walls in your stick house resemble a drum. Hit it in the middle and it bounces a bit. An 18" diameter log will bounce a bit less.

Don't worry, your place will be as solid as a rock. You won't have that "trailer house" feeling in the home you build. I've never been in a LHBA home that wasn't quiet and secure feeling.

You will LOVE the members side!

thanks. i like the drum vibration effect you brought up. i have a logger dating a younger cousin of mine and they seem kinda serious so im interrested in finding a good use for him if there together when i build.

If noise is an issuse for windows, you may want to think about custom windows. I watched a show where the guys house was about 10 feet from the tracks. You can imagine the noise. The window guy made him a dual pane replacement window with one pane at 4mm thick and the other pane at 6mm thick. Becuase of the different thicknesses, each pane had different resonance and therefore would vibrate at a different frequency. Seemed to nearly knock the sound to zero on the TV show, but they could have overplayed it a little.

Other thoughts: The stone quarry is probably sending two noises, noise through the air and vibrations through the ground. Trees might help reduce the noise through the air. Anyone in earthquake country know anything about reducing noise from the vibrations in the ground? Is it worth it? Full basement vs. some other foundation?

You know, that sound deadening window trick makes sense... You never know what you're gonna learn around here.
