Hi outsider, welcome to the forum!

Oak and maple are hard woods, which would mean they are just going to be a lot harder to work with. Not too common in the log home insdutry, it seems softwoods what people use.

I used the search feature and found a good thread about hardwood http://www.loghomebuilders.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=464&highlight=hard they talk about some of the downsides to oak on that thread

I'm building with hardwood (yellow poplar) and don't have many problems. Oak and maple will be hard to find in a length that doesn't taper and is straight enough for log home building. Walk over your land and look at the trees- you want them to be at least 8" at the small end, and as close to perfectly straight as possible. How long will your logs be if you cut them as I described, and do you have enough? It's not the species of the tree, it's the growth pattern of the tree.

Well, except for driving spikes into oak and maple. That, I'll pass on.
