my building site has a 6ft drop from front to back so I was wondering if this style house can be built with a full basement since the logs are alot heavier than kit homes. This is answered in the class im sure but with my work schedule I havent been able to take it yet.. thanks.

several members are building, or have already built, with a full basement.

Yea, seems a great many build walkout/daylight basements, typically via ICFs or temporary forms, poured concrete. Block isn't usually used, but I could be with some engineering.

If you are building where there are no building codes, it can be done. Anywhere there are, you'll never get approval.

I would prefer a stone veneer anyway due to the ease and speed of construction and long term durability .

we did our walkout basement with ICF and will finish the exterior with stone harvested from our build site (and free fieldstone from local farms). gonna be gorgeous when its finished:)

Please tell me... What's going on with the roof... are those solar panels on top?

No, He only used insulation panels over the heated area of the house so it has a rise in the roof there.

Hi Rod your comment about building codes were you referring to the stone wall basement or basements in general? and if basements in general why would that be an issue with building codes?

No, just stone foundations won't get approval anywhere. (despite the many, many pre-1900's farmhouses all around, and doing just fine)

It's because, while concrete has standards that make it predictable from location to location, large chunks of Mother Earth are not uniform in strength and structure. You'd have to get an engineer to certify your quarry.

How'd I do, Peter?

Thanks! I am talking to a couple people now about updating my website, I just hate to lay out the cash for it

Not bad, but rock is likely stronger than concrete. The thing is not so much the raw material, but what is done with it... I have never heard of a one-piece stone basement. It is likely fit together at best by a skiklled mason. at worst, it will be cobbled together by one of us. The amount of variability between those two extremes is HUGE--many thousands of times different. That and there is steel encased in 'crete. I have never seen that particular schist in nature. You can likely make a pier out of a single rock. I would not want to build a basement out of rock.

So you're saying that a stone basement wall is illegal??? Well that sucks! Guess I need to rethink my basement now.

Not illegal, it just won't pass inspection/approval where inspections are required. If someone is building where permits and inspections aren't required, it's no problem. But like Peter said, it's all about skill. There's a reason a stone mason isn't simply called a mason.
