Hello and thanks in advance for any replies,

I am going to add on to my existing 14x22 log cabin (it's about 40 years old). The addition will be 22x22 and 2 stories, the foundation is already in place (it was there when I bought it, 9 massive concrete posts) the extra space will be nice but also I want the roof to be higher for better solar exposure and to avoid tying the roofs together as the settling would most likely be too much to make that possible. anyway, here is my question:

What is the best way to splice log walls together? I would think a post as the 'in-between' would work, as in piece-en-piece. I can't get my head wrapped around another way that could keep a more classical look yet still allow for different settling between the old and new structures.

Any help would be much appreciated and thank you for your time.

thanks.

MTCFilms,

You've come to the right place.

Take a look in the student home pics. There are several Piece-n-piece homes in there.
One is doing exactly what you are speaking of.

I'd recommend taking the class as a GREAT benefit for cost savings and DIY wisdom.

Welcome aboard.

Hi jrdavis,

thanks for the reply! I have been looking but can't seem to find the one you're talking about, any chance you could give me the name it's under?

I've been thinking about taking the class, sounds like everyone who does rants and raves about it so I guess it would be worth-while.

Thanks again.

Try the students area on this link:

If you look through there you should see the P-n-P in there.

Happy viewing.

The first thing you should know about our way of building is our home do not settle. Period... Our logs shrink around their centers, but the height of the wall remains the exactly same. If your log home is typical, it has already settled as the logs shank. Hence the best way to do an addition, if the logs are no longer shrinking is our way of building... Equals added to equals remain equal.

My septic installer added a room to his log home.

I believe he used the standard way of joining logs as taught in class. You will note there is no separation in the joined walls even the sizes of logs do not match. This is expected because the log walls do not settle in either the addition or the original home...

Note, the original home was built (about 1990) by one man (using chain hoists) before his children were old enough to help... Now his boys are long gone.
