Hi all,

Im new here, it seem to be a nice place to learn... (I can't go to vegas to attend to the class...this year)

Im come from Quebec in Canada. I plan to build a log home with the LHBA techniques some day.

My question is, if i cut the trees in november, did i have to peel it and debarke it during the winter or i can wait to the next spring or winter?

thanks you very much

Francis,

When to drop em and when to peel em is covered from twenty different directions in class. Personally if I cut them in November I'd be in no hurry to peel them but that's just me. I logged mine in March and peeled in July.

Whatever you do just don't drop your trees before you go to class. Trust me there are all kinds of thing to worry about and consider before you go to logging. You'll love the class when the time comes.

Thanks you really much for this advice.

Las vegas is really far from Quebec, it is hard to attend to the class.

LHBA dont have chapter in Canada? They never give course here?

This is possible to buys books and DVD without attending the original course?

Thanks and have a nice day

Hey! A fellow Canadian! We are few and far between.

There are many questions too be answered, lots about when to cut logs, etc, etc. Don't worry too much about that yet.

You must travel to wherever the LHBA instructors are holding a course, unfortunately, that's either been Washington, or in the last few years, Vegas.

And Vegas isn't that far. I took the course in Washington, that's farther than Vegas! Not sure where in QC you are, but there are direct flights to Vegas from Ottawa, probably from Montreal too.

Sin City usually makes it pretty cheap to get there, bet cheaper than flying in Canada.

Welcome aboard.

BTW your log home is nice, really nice!

I know that Las vegas is not so "far" but im little bit to poor to attend to this convention :(

I wish LHBA will open some chapter in Canada some days..

Thank you very much for the compliment.

Well, where theres a will, there's away. I saved up alot of Aeroplan points from day to day shopping to pay for my flight.

LHBA has been around for a long time, and they haven't really left the Western part of the USA, not likely they will move anytime soon.

I could be wrong. Stranger things have happened.

I remember one class in boston a few years back. that is ONE CLASS IN 5 YEARS OF WATCHING. I wouldn't hold my breath for any other venues. But do the math, a house might cost 200k USD. if you can build one for 50k (which is completely do able), then the 1,000 dollars or so you spend on the class/transportation seems like a huge bargain.

Anyway, you asked about your trees... From experience, Peeling is easiest right after the tree is fallen. The sap kind of becomes super glue as it dries. the hardest time is in august the year after they have been fallen. However, a few of my trees sat for several years on racks... they get easier to peel again after they *completely* dry out, and the wood shrinks away from the bark.

Thanks you StressMan for this information..

In fact the construction can't cost 50K in my situation... (I wish to made this camp for 8k to 10k)

It will only be a camp wthout electricity and any convenience.

I will try to peeled it in november if it is not too cold (under 0 degres)

You are on a budget! Hopefully land is already had and you just need to build a structure on it. In your situation, I'd do piers on boulders, cement is cheap, but mine cost me 6k...

You'll be pooping outside and likely showering too.

Is this a 4 seasons place or only during summer? You may be able to skimp on the insulation.

My roof cost almost 6k. dunno how you will cut corners here. you need a waterproof top on your structure. I spose if you don't mind shingles, and don't mind a mixture of them, you can collect scraps off of CL. (I much prefer a metal roof), but hey, for thems that poop outdoors, this may be the ticket.

you can build a structure for that kind of money, but it won't be lavish. What size are you building? mine is a 24x24 with a half loft.

I have an 6 acres land.

I will take trees for free on it.

I wish to make an 30' x 30' base on multiples sonotube for fundation (one at each 8 feets).

It will be 4 seasons camp but roughly rustic, with metal roof.

Its is possible?

If you cut them anytime after from Nov-Feb in Quebec, I'd wait until late May-June to peel.

well, 6 acres might get enough trees for a 30x30.

so trees = $0
plumbing = $0
electrical= $0
if you can get a sawmill up there for a day
dimensional lumber = $0
doors, made yourself = $0
sonotubes (14"dia x25)= ?$
concrete (@120/yd) = 8 yd = $950
windows = free if you can scrounge off CL
metal roof (40x40/cosine(pitch angle, say 30 deg) = 1850sf, or ~1800 bucks from lowes

insulation = ~free - 2000
plywood,etc = ~12/sht, or ~160 bucks.
steel HW = ~0 - 5000, this depends --nails, allthread, rebar, etc.
Tools (hope you can borrow them) ~10k

the short answer is it could be done, but no easily.

This is correct to use sonotube as fundation?

Their are a max time to air dry is wood?
