So how long is your building season?

Mine starts around May, and two years ago it ended in early September. It was 90 F. and almost no clouds. six days later it had dropped to 10 F. and a blowing snow.

I would like to see a members meeting. Always fun to get together, share ideas and see what others are doing, but it's already mid June and I'm starting to panic. So much work, and so little time. Doubt I could even attend a meeting for at least several months. About 10 - 12 weeks left to get in the concrete, foundation tar, and anything else that is temperature sensitive.

Right now the truck can deliver sheetrock to my door...well, window. If I wait too long it will take two people packing one sheet at a time through 700' of snow. 225 sheets of 5/8" rock...that might not work.

I like being high up in the mountains but that does cut into my ability to build.

So what's your season like?
What weather challenges are you facing and what tricks can you pass on to the rest of us?

great thread!!
our weather dependent/temperature dependent building season is May-mid October. snow is pretty much gone by early april but takes another several weeks for all the mud to try out.
until we're weathered in, we're pretty much limited to that timeframe. after we're weathered in, those time frames will be a bit more flexible as we're not so remote that truck's can't get in with our dry wall:)

Im pretty lucky here in NC. Im right in the middle of the state and really isnt much of a reason I couldnt pretty much build year round. There might be a week or so here and there that if I were putting in some concrete I might want to hold off but other than that its the heat for this time of year. March, April and May are terrific months and last of Sept really right up until Thanksgiving are pretty ideal too as the heat and humidity go away or certainly drop down to tolerable by Oct

In Western NC I have been able to build up until just before Thanksgiving then we start to get snow until around the 1st of April. If the snow is melted the ground is too muddy unless we have some hard freezing temps then we were able to drag and stack logs. Otherwise we had no traction and we made a mess out of the logs.

Mid April-mid November. Give or take a month.

Well, let's see. For my site, snow season lasts right up through the end of March. Then its mud season for two months. From June, it's typically good right up through October, (though, as of June 12th, I'm still battling mud) though it will be a lot cooler come September. November can go either way, and it's back to snow season beginning in December.

Mark,
You've got a good blog going there. I look forward to seeing your progress.

I try to work all year. I dont mind the cold, but the wind cant be blowing to much. If I ever finish my roof and get some windows and chinking im looking forward to a toasty woodstove to keep me warm to do some framing.

Same as Patrick-
I can't wait to have my windows/chinking done, then I'll work through the winter if I'm not done by late fall. Exterior work here in WNY stops for me when it hits 0 degrees F. Shuddering thinking of last winter, having to take a break every 30 to let the pneumatic nailers (and us) warm by the campfire for 5 minutes to keep functioning...
