View Full Version : Low cost preserver for wood stock that will be used to eat off of?

Today, I cut down a desert willow that was a nuisance to the house. I went ahead and squared up some of the logs (approximately 15"x12"). The wood is as dark in the core as walnut with a 1.5" border that is blonde. I think it would make a good small GP cutting board or several hand carved bowls. However, that project will need to be put on hold. I thought about covering it with wax.
Are there any "Low Cost" recommendations on preserving it?
I tried attaching a pic but do not think I have that privilege as of yet. Membership is around the corner.

If it's kept dry, it shouldn't suffer any ill effects, just like logs, you shouldn't need much if any treatment (I'm assuming you will store it indoors).
As for a finish, I'd use whatever food grade finish you like, usually a nut based oil, such as these:

I'd hate to think how much those products would cost to preserve all our logs.
If you are making a cutting board a good option is to "iron in" beeswax with an old clothes iron. I can tell you from experience not to use your wife's good one. You can put foil over the wax before you "iron" it and that will help protect the iron. Do it outside. :)
