Nobody needs to reply to this, as this is just me sounding off and probably a better thing to post on Facebook, but nobody would understand! haha
Driving up I-5 in Oregon right now (delivering on Olympic Peninsula tomorrow), and this is the first time driving through any forested area since finding the LHBA website, and it is driving both us insane. Talk about distracted driving. Besides just the utter beauty up here, we are suffering an extreme case of log lust.
We're hand-picking trees we want, ridge poles, RPSL's....just passed some folks "logging" and already thinking we'll head back there after delivering and try to buy some logs off 'em. Yeah right...and put them where when we get back to Omaha?
We have always loved this area anyway, but it has a whole new meaning now. Trees, beautiful TREES!!! haha

I know what you mean! I don't look at these SYPs the same way anymore. And I've started looking at the logs on the logging trucks now. Wondering where they're coming from if they're hauling large ones. Drove all over the county this past weekend looking for land. Mostly looking at the trees on the land. Can't find too many places locally that haven't been logged in the past 20 years. The land I'm looking at across the road is still the most desirable.

yup, it's a tough thing to do, take that class... then have to wait to start the project. sooner or later, one of our members will run off the road staring at trees. I took the class 8 years ago and have already built a home, and I still pass certain trees on my way to work and think about how they would be "just right" in my next home.

Yeah, every other truck we passed yesterday between there and here was a logging truck...and passed several saw mills too. THEN, we saw this pile of logs on the side of the road that had been cleared (I'm guessing to expand the roadway or shoulder?) and there were probably 40-50 beautiful, straight, long, thick logs in that pile (and seemed to have little taper--hard to tell as we whizzed by at a blazing 55mph! LOL). About killed me (FREE LOGS?!?!). Similar piles had just thin logs, brush, etc. Then, this morning we entered one of the Naval facilities up here and I'm thinking this place is probably FULL of old-growth trees that haven't seen a logger's truck in eons. It's just torture!! I'm sitting beside several ridge-pole quality trees right now. *sigh* C'mon JUNE class!!!

Christi,
Your Log Lust is what we call Log Porn. I know what you mean about watching the log trucks. But if you want to cause yourself a stroke? Drive some of the rural roads through the northern coastal areas of CA. Some of the biggest trees you can drive a truck through. Seriously, there are some with their own drive-through. That's enough to cause one to pull over to catch their breath and perhaps splash some water on one's face.

LOL Ed!! Yeah, I've always wanted to see that area (and not from the Interstate! LOL). Year or so ago, we took a few days off in WA and fished the Cowlitz River. Didn't have much luck, so on our last day we decided to go out to Mt Ranier National Park. Wow, are there some huge trees in that forest!! Absolutely amazing. I don't dare go back now...probably get arrested for attempted tree poaching. LOL
We have stopped for the night in Tumwater, and to the east of the truck stop (Pilot) there is an empty lot with quite a few large trees on it....and then I saw it....my perfect ridge pole!! Well, I don't know yet how to properly judge a ridge pole, but it sure seemed perfect to me. I'll bet it could be had pretty easily, if anyone had a notion to try. So, there's a tip for anyone that's interested. ;-) I'd love to have it for myself, but if not then I'll be happy knowing it went to a good home. *snicker*
