June 4th & 5th class

Haven't made hotel reservations yet. May do it last minute and hope to find a bargain. But, if many of you are staying at Harrah's, may pre-book room there. We hail from the great state of Nebraska, but we are nation-wide as we own a tractor-trailer (owner-operators). Looking forward to meeting all of you, on here and in the class!

A small world, indeed! That is so exciting to know we have fellow LHBA'ers closeby!

jr...we own a Kenworth W9, but we're leased to a company so we're not supposed to haul anything but their loads. We may need to figure a way around that though to haul our own logs. I'll be researching it and let you know. Love Glenwood...that's one area on our list for our land purchase, except Hughes has the prices so high! Or, maybe Ponca Hills, or western Sarpy Co. Dunno yet. Gotta take the class first LOL

Stressman...have watched some of your videos...that first log was exciting! 'Course, not as exciting as it was for you, I'm sure. One of our sons is attending UNL also, one more year to go! Computer Science major.

Nice to meet ya'll!

I received a confirmation email from Mechanical Transfer Corp Sales [info@mechanicaltransfer.com] when I signed up for the May 28 / 29 class. So if you didn't receive an email from them then you might want to check in with them to confirm you are all set to go for June.

Hi,
My wife and I just took the class in January, we stay at Harrah's it was convenient, ladies can run upstairs to the room and grab warmer jacket or blanket since the conference room can get little cold from time to time. On the day of the class you won't have much time to grab food but there is few places right outside the hotel and inside hotel. I would recommend getting 1 day pass to buffet its good for 24 hrs to 6 or 7 different hotels. If you get the buffet pass on first day of the class you can have breakfast before class, lunch, dinner after class and breakfast next day if you make it there right before 24 hours is up from the time you got the pass prior day. I think it was $40.00 or $45.00 per person but if you sign up for hotel rewards card I think it was $35.00 per person. You will have hard time getting 4 or more meal for less then that. You are not limited how many times you can eat there in a day. Plus it was one of the quickest way to get food. Harrah's buffet had good variety of food, Cesar I was less then impressed with, Bellagio was best food but I can't remember if it was part of the package or not, most likely not. Room in Harrah's was nothing great but acceptable, A/C was weak, we arrived on Thursday night and my wife was little cold we turn the heat up a bit could never get the temperature down below 72F with thermostat set at min 65F for next 4 days. But if I had to do it allover again I would stay at Harrah's my next choice of the hotel would be Mirage, I think rooms could be little better there and it's right across the street. Have fun there and say hello to Mr. E. and Steve.

BillnChristi

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info! Is the buffet pass available to non-guests as well? We have the Total Rewards Card since there is a Horseshoe Casino near our home base. We will be arriving in Vegas in a tractor-trailer, so had to make reservations at the Holiday Inn on Palos Verdes St in order to have somewhere to park our truck. Will hail a cab, or rent a car, or walk back and forth (only a mile away).

We are Corporate Lodging members, so our rate for 6/3-6/6 is $191.85 for entire stay (3 nights). Adding this info in case someone else is also interested in saving a little hard-earned dough. Would have preferred to pay just a little more to stay at Harrah's (for convenience), but alas....can't park the big rig just anywhere. LOL

Looking forward to meeting everyone. Hope they provide nametags to make it easier to identify other folks. It'd be nice if everyone would put their screen-name, first name, and where they're from. Then you know who you're talking to and if they may live close to you so you can hook up on the Member's Forum after the class. We're just social butterflies sometimes. :) And, it seems that part of the magic of the LHBA system is the support you receive from other members. That has to be absolutely invaluable! No one has to go this alone.

Happy Friday, all!

BillnChristi,

Just read your post regarding staying at the Holiday Inn on Palos Verdes, thats where I stayed too. I travel a lot for work and stay in Holiday Inn affiliated places most of the time so I had enough points for 4 free nights there. You will like the place fine Im pretty sure. its only a couple of years old and very clean. You also shouldnt have any problems parking your rig there as it adjoins a strip mall parking lot and it seemed as best I can remember there were always plenty of spots open near the hotel. The best thing also is, they have a shuttle that drops you off and picks you up from several of the main hotels on the strip there and its free. When i was there, they didnt drop off at Harrahs, but in the mornings when I was usually the only one on the shuttle with a nice "is there any way i could be dropped off at Harrahs instead of the Venetian" and a few dollars tip the driver was always very willing to do that. The Venetian is the drop off/pick up point that is closest to Harrahs. I didnt have as much luck getting them to pick me up there in the evenings because there were normally other riders that had called ahead of me for pick up at the normal (Venetian) location.

If you want to gamble any and want it within very easy walking distance of the Holiday Inn, there is a good casino directly across the road from the Holiday inn called Terribles, yes thats the name for some reason. Its not all the bells and whistles of the big name ones, but is plenty large and has pretty much anything you want in there along with a very reasonably priced buffet and another restaurant too. Then if you do want all the flash of the big name ones, right around the corner and up about a block is the hard rock hotel and casino, so you arent missing out on anything by staying there but the crowds and traffic

Wow, this is exciting to have so many from our general area in the class with us!

We have a son at UNL currently, a son in Omaha, two daughters (and two son-in-laws) and 1 grandbaby in Sioux Falls, and a son (and D-I-L) and daughter and 3 grandbabies in Pierre SD. Yes, we're the Brady Bunch, and yes, we'll need a large great room. :)

One of the SIL's in Sioux Falls is a welder by trade, so keep that in mind when the time comes. Could come in handy I think. LOL

We are SO looking forward to this class and meeting all of our "neighbors."

Oh, and thanks for the info on our chosen hotel, Zetmandu! VERY much appreciated.

I just booked my trip. I am staying at the Immperial Palace which is right next to the Harrahs.
There is a two day sale right now on travelocity when staying at Immperial palace. I saved about 75 dollars from the prices I have seen over the past month in case anyone is still looking at where to stay.

Can't wait to take the class in June.

If you follow the signs to the monorail from/to Harrahs and Imperial Palace it will take you to a pedestrian walkway between the two hotels. You will cross over in just a couple minutes. Also for $28 (or $5 per trip) 3-day unlimited monorail passes can be purchased for travel up and down the strip from the MGM/Signature to Harrahs with stops in between and beyond.

Thank you.

It has come at a perfect time. We are moving to Kalispell, MT in June/July. We are looking at property, houses, etc, etc. We had always dreamed about this but after reading everything we could find on LHBA and doing some research at the library and on the net we want to build our own home with cash or as close to it as possible. We are just trying to minimize a decrease in comfort level during the transition, especially in a colder environment than we are normally used to. From reading and viewing all the members accomplishments we are really positive about the short discomfort we will endure.

We see an enhanced level of freedom around the corner.

We are going to build probably in Marshall, Tate or maybe Benton county. I have a really good friend that lives out side of Amory. I own some property now in Tippah county and I'm still kicking around using some trees from there, but would have to buy a few more.

Thomas Pannell
04-18-2011, 02:39 PM
Are you going to try to use all the same type wood, or will you mix it up? I have just enough so I can use all Southern Yellow Pine, but my property will have some other wood (poplar, oak & others I’ll have to take down. That would require the logs to be trucked a good distance though.

Amory is real close to my Itawamba lot. I'm on the Ten-Tom North of Smithville.

My buddy lives kinda between Smithville and Amory. You will be real close to him. He lives in a log home too. He took apart an old house I believe around 100 years old, moved it and put it back together when he and his wife got married. They have built on over the years and have beautiful place. His house is made of hand hewn poplar that are 22" thick and about 6-8" high. He said the logs were real light...an advantage of poplar. Yep...no codes is SWEET!

We really enjoyed the class! It was great. We didn't know when we booked our hotel that the Imperial Palace was the closest place within walking distance (even has a sky bridge connecting to Harrah's). We had already booked at Harrah's to make things easier, and purchased the 24 hour buffet package on Harrah's website. The buffet is open from 7 am till 10 pm, so we went to breakfast around 7:45 the first morning we used the passes and went at 7 the next morning, so we were able to use the passes for 4 meals. (I saw the suggestion about staggering mealtimes here.) Ate a couple of meals at the McDonald's next door to Harrah's. Took a shuttle to/from from the airport. If you happen to have downtime before or after the class, I'd recommend the Tournament of Kings dinner show at Excalibur. We took a taxi there Friday night, and it was really good.

I stumbled across this website about 7 years ago when we were home shopping. We bought a place that was less than what we wanted--it is a double-wide manufactured home--but we love the 3 acres of land. We should pay it off within the next few months and hope to start building within the next year or two. One day a year or two ago, I was cleaning out my e-mail, and found where I had first sent my husband an e-mail about the LHBA website. I forwarded that same e-mail to him and said, "This link still works, and it still looks like a cool site." At that point, he got really interested in it.

We felt pretty sure from looking at the website and blogs before we attended class that this method was do-able for us. Now we are even more confident that we'll be able to use this method to build a nice, energy-efficient home. Steve and Ellsworth did a wonderful job of teaching and answering our many questions. The first day of class was our 18th wedding anniversary, so this trip and the class were both a gift to ourselves, and an investment in our future. Thank you for taking the time to teach us!

Hey verbdude, did you see the "Dig This" advertisement while in Vegas? I went by the place the day after class and they have a couple of dozers and excavators they will teach you to use and then let you dig a ditch or something on the lot. Thanks, Zetmandu! I bookmarked your blog - I'll be interested in watching your B&P creation come together. Looks like you and your help are sweltering in the heat lately. That SYP you are using - is it longleaf, slash, shortleaf, or loblolly? I don't think I have enough long straight trees on my property to finish a house so I guess I'll be looking for some longleaf in my area.

Zetmandu
06-15-2011, 07:49 AM
verbdude,
yea its been really hot so far for even here at this point. I wish I could absolutely answer your question about the type of SYP Im using, and being from the country all my life its actually kind of shameful that I cant, but Im not sure I can tell the difference in the types of pine I am using. In the past, before LHBA came along, I just always saw a pine tree, and never really paid much attention that there were different types of pines here. Now that im peeling them though, i do notice the bark is just slightly different on some of them and best guess so far is that I mainly have longleaf with some loblolly mixed in.I dont think I have slash, as from what i have read so far, those seem to be more prevalent down in Fl and Ga.
If you are worried about being straight enough, well you should see some of mine here, they looked pretty good while they were standing up, but once cut and peeled, welllll...not so straight anymore. I still plan on using all but the very worst of them, because as the good people on this site who have built previously or at least have walls up etc, go ahead and use them, once its all up, chinking is done, floors down and furniture is in, it wont be that noticeable and if it is, it just adds some character to the house

Hi Destruct,

Have you moved to Kalispell?

How do you like it there?

My family of 5 is hoping to move there next year. Just seeing what your likes/dislikes of that area are? Have you bought land already?

My wife and I hope to be LHBA members asap - just hoping for a WA state seminar because we have family there that can watch the kids - we live in Wisconsin right now..

What reasons do you like that area? - I'm guessing work was your first draw...

thank you,
Matt

Hi Matt, I don't believe the LHBA plans to have any classes in Washington in the future. That's where we live so it would have been great for us too! I believe they are all in Vegas now due to cheap and frequent flights from all over the country, hotels and restaurants to fit every budget, and easy transportation from the airport.

You could email them though and ask: info@loghomebuilders.org

Good luck!

Shari

I read June and was almost wetting my skivvies...then I caught the year.:(

Then again it gave me a reason to read this too. lol Not to hijack it Matt but I can also toss my .02 out on area.
My sister has a smaller place nearby, an A frame tucked into the mountain, and she loves the place. Truly beautiful spot for sure and people all seem pretty neat. She works at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center so I can attest they have good facilities there too.

The times I've been there I always leave thinking "I could do this" and maybe will someday. It's somewhat of a younger crowd that seems to be moving in (talking 20-30s) in past few years and they like to have a good time for sure. That said it's a pretty stable area and great spot to raise a family too. Costs are reasonable vs say Missoula or such.... but land costs are getting up there. Only thing that maybe one needs to be careful about is the employment thing if one needs to work. That said - that's an issue everywhere I imagine.
Cannot wait to hear the feedback from the party you directed this too .... cheers
