I'm having difficulty finding any substantial written material on piece-en-piece log cabin construction. Can anyone help me out? I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,

I wish there were more out there. Acouple of members here have built this way, and it seems like the cheapest and easiest way for a single person to erect log walls. I looked EVERYWHERE for good info on this style, and eventually gave up. You'll see a couple of homes in the photo section so i know we have people here that have done it, keep bumping your post to the top if you don't get a fast answer.

I'm not sure what "piece-en-piece log cabin construction" means. Could you explain Babbitt?

Piece-en-piece is a construction technique for log cabins by which structural support is provided by vertical beams or posts. Horizontal logs are then attached between the posts to form the walls. It's main advantages are that it allows you to use smaller logs (in my case 8 feet) and it permits a good deal of flexibilty in design. Now if I could just get some detail on the joints...

Way to much work for me. I'll stick with our style log homes. Thanks for explaining it to me. I've never seen it before but I can see it being done.

Pretty cool use of smaller logs it seems and maybe option for some. Up north here they have a couple cabins that look similar around the Ash River Trail. They date back 100 plus years so must be sturdy. Better use that smaller stuff to build than for firewood in my mind.

One great advantage is that 8-10 foot logs are available everywhere, you don't have to source 40+foot long logs. Furthermore, if you know anyone that runs a dozer, they can probably get you all the logs you want for free. I think of how many times i pass a dozer project and see them burning the trees they dozed down, i wonder how much use i could have gotten out of those trees.
