I'm looking for some big rustic hinges for a front door I am having built out of our left over cypress.
I saw the forum where Ellsworth had a bunch of hinge sites, but I didn't see any that were very big.
I love the barbaric door on the Bellingham Log Home, & am modeling the door after that. Any suggestions on where to find hinges like that or where they got those hinges?
Thanks

I have a some friends, actually a father and son team that I'm hoping will end up hand making my hinges for me while they teach me to do my own metal work. One of a kind custom hinges seems to follow the whole mind set. Not aware of anyplace that sells them but then again, I haven't searched yet.
Good luck and welcome.

howdy : ) n glad to see ya!
i would check out some salvage places..tho im thinking folks are onto the value that these things have, so they wouldnt be inexpensive. the ones here are spendy. a blacksmith might be a better deal.

Here in the north east we have several old textile mills that have been converted into swap meet/flea market outlets on the weekends. There are many folks selling old hardware n tool stuff. Once in a while you can find a matching set of old gnarlly monster hinges from an old barn or mill building.

Welding shop can make you something if you have an idea what you'd like them to look like. I'll probably be welding my own door hinges for my front door, since I plan to have one which will be unconventionally large and exceptionally heavy.
For real authenticity, find a good blacksmith. (it's tough as it sounds, but they are out there)

You may want to start with some inexpensive large as you can buy hinges (I bought mine at harbor freight for 5 bucks each) and have a wielding shop add stuff per your design. If you go to a specialist shop, I bet that what they will do and then charge an arm and a leg... or more...
Best of luck

Ironwork details are what highlight the wood for my wife and I. Viking/barbaric designs. Your best work will be done by - (word of mouth) some talented retired pipeliner that has a fab shop. If he likes ya and you are specific on what you want(pay CASH of coarse) he'll be a lot cheaper than the antique cast iron. I like to make my own and use domestic steel. Then treat it for some weather and age. I think everyone should have their crest on their front door. If the welder is worth his salt he can build you what ever you want with just a torch, welder and some flat stock so don't get caught up in some fancy "plasma CAD" shop they'll fleece ya. Alabama is one of the welding/fab capitols of the world -hell that's where "the Amazin' Blaze" is from (google it!). I work with many people from the gulf in the offshore oil industry that are begging for work that are highly skilled in fabricating anything.Look around and don't be in a hurry. Great forum!

Is this what you're looking for?

I'd agree with Rocklock- modify a shorter heavy duty hinge with a strap. Any welder can do it- but check with your local blacksmith guild and technical college. The college might do it for free, or the blacksmith might hand forge something more rustic.
