so i have been looking at quite a few books related to my building MY home, let it be known, that just a few weeks ago i bought a house in 29 palms ca (southern californa desert) as investment property, i do not consider it my home, but my house....any way, no that im done with that tangent.

i was going through the library, and looking for wind power/solar power books, as i was going through 2 when i was back state side. then i found a book
"Build Your Own Low-Cost Log Home" written by ROGER HARD

i have skimmed and looked at all of mabe 5 pages, covers trees and log preperation, basic tools,

house designs.

heating systems and utilities

it also covers types of joints, i cant find the page right now but it speaks about dove tails, taper cuts, and what ever you call it what stye lincoln log were, and many more, there is about 3 pages of these things.

nowhere in this book, have i seen but and pass...anywhere... o well, ill read the book, if only for the general knowlege it will give me.

anyone heard of or read this book?

thank you.
-ANDREW MASON.

..are you active duty? I will keep this short, I spent years of time preparing to build a log home, researched thoroughly kits, chinkless, and every other method of building possible..if you want the simplest, least expensive way to erect your log structure, TAKE THE CLASS! Then go back and read those books and you will see more clearly the answers to the ten thousand questions you may have.

I saw it at our local library, and just browsed it on Amazon. His name is appropriate. It's a simple subject. Very easy to do right, and even easier to do wrong. The book makes it complicated, and introduces a lot of long-term problems. There is a B&P home on the cover.

yes, i am active duty, and i would be taking this upcoming class in vegas, but i am currently deployed, and will not be back till jan-feb.
i do fully plan on taking the class, and builded a B&P style home, i am mostly trying to get ideas for the design of my home, size, number of rooms, lay out, such and such and so on.
g'pa, thanks for the info on the house on the cover, next time im in the libary, ill have to look at the book again.

One great thing about the LHBA style home is that none of your interior walls will be load bearing and you can pretty much do your floorplan however you like, or change it in the future if you get tired of it :)

thats great to hear....i also just had a vision of al huse of all moveable walls, and furnature on casters, you could rearage it every day if you liked... that would be a crazy scheme

well, i finished my last book, and im on to my newest one.
its a big one, at 692 pages, its going to take me this entire deployment to finish
it is titled "do-it-yourself housebuilding"
"the complete handbook" by a man named george nash.... and it covers everything, now, it covers the construction of sick framed houses, but i figre lots of it can still carry over.
right now im reading about foundations and footings... i have allot to learn, thats all i can say.

Yep the more you can read & learn ahead of time the better.
I bought a framing book which was handy, because all the interior walls are generally built with regualr 2x material so things are similar when it comes to that.
The large majority of members end up doing their own foundation as well, we did, it wasn't too bad.

what kind of foundation did you go with?

Sonotubes sitting on continuous footer.
We did it this way because it was all DIY, & a good price
