im building a small log cabin 8 sided with 16' sides on stone walls three foot above grade and i'd like to do it with basswood... ive been told to avoid that notion but they are the largest straightest tress on my land... would this be disasterous?

The stuff is pretty soft. Might work, but you could get more money by milling the wood yourself (mill, dry, plane) and selling it, and then using the money to buy trees, and finish your home. Finished Linden (Basswood) retails for $3 - $4 /bd. ft. You have quite a commodity on your land!

we have LOTS of it on our property but unless the trees are very small (6-8 inches in diameter at the butt end), they are HOLLOW inside (bummer!!!) saw this with EVERY basswood we cut when clearing our build site.
not sure if we're the only ones to see this happen though.
