I live in Tampa and am saving to buy around 1 acre or more to build a log home. I am wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how much money it will take for materials to build and 4-5 bedroom home with 3500 sq ft?? Just a simple floor-plan. I would like to do all the work by my self and help of other students. Is there anyone in Tampa or near by that has taken the class that could help? I am desperate for help and suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Tampaloghome, This site is about building your own log home. The methods employed here tend to be geared toward folks who want to build their own home without going onto 30 years of debt. The amount of money to be spent in the progress is all up to the folks building and dependant on how fast they build, how much help they hire, how much equipment they buy, what their land looks like, how much they spend on a kitchen, etc, etc, etc. Your story will be totally different than mine. When our family is done, we will still be out of debt and every time a visitor walks in the front door they will look around with their mouth hanging open and say wow. If a couple of worn-out 56-year old folks and their 18-year old Son can do it, anyone can (as long as this is what you really want). Read everything you can on this site and if it feels like what you've been looking for, take the class. It won't make sense until you've been through the class and are one of us.

it is memeber's policy to only help other members, besides general help on the non-member's forum... btw, I am not near FL (about as far away as you can get and still be in the lower 48), but I do know of several members in that area.
Anyway, not to come off snooty, take the class, then you can decide how much house you need and what to budget for it. 700 bucks is really cheap, in the scope of what your house will cost. you can easilyoverpay that much for logs themselves.

I live in the Tampa area in Pinellas County and I took the class. I won't be building in Florida though. Costs to build our style of log home in Florida would vary depending on how resourceful you are in securing materials, tools, land. Taking the class would help you understand how to do this in the most economical way. Then after, you would have to adapt what you learned in the class to the local Florida market and building codes. There is another member from the Tampa area and he is already busy on his project. He's building north of the Tampa area and has already dealt with the re-engineering of drawings for code and for procuring of logs, at least I think he has!! It's been awhile since I saw a post from him.
