My fiance & I are also attending the Boston Class in May. We've both been saving & waiting for the right opportunity. Three years later, we're finally in the right position, and we're signed up. We haven't decided if we're driving or flying yet. It'd be a 15 hr. more/less drive from Chattanooga, TN, but we enjoy long road trips! I think we'll make some plans within the next week or so. We'd like to spend a day exploring the city & visiting some family on fiance's side. May fly because of time & work schedules.....Look forward to meeting @ class! Happy 10th anniversary! Quite an accomplishment. (We've been together for 7 & just got engaged in Oct. last yr.)

Allrighty, I'm all paid up for Boston. Isn't there supposed to be some kind of application process that weeds out kit home insider finks?

Hi ccosborne3,
Take a look at the "what to expect" page here:
http://www.loghomebuilders.org/what-expect-class-not-wa
Item #1 is "Each member of your party must fill out an electronic membership
application. We will e-mail you a link to the online form a few days
before the class."
You should get your link anywhere from 3-14 days before your class date. If you need it sooner just e-mail info@loghomebuilders.org and we'll get yours done sooner.
Welcome to the Association, see you at the class! :)

Cool, I'm looking forward to it. I was under the mistaken impression it would be with the payment form. Now I know better.

Yes! Going to the Boston class, already made the arrangements. We've been looking at the website for over 5 years and registered about 3 years ago. Can't wait but I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Runkyjan-
I hear ya...we've been waiting a long time as well. I started browsing on the LHBA site when I still lived in Wisconsin. Moved to NC...and now I'm in TN.....3 states, over 900 miles, & we're ready for our log home journey. Are you flying to Boston or driving?

wenzel_777,
We are flying to Boston. Right now we are stationed in Japan but will be in the Norfolk area in May. Looks like a nice scenic drive for you.

My wife and I have also been waiting for a NE class. Since we, no I, don't fly, this is just right. We love to drive anyway and being disabled, the drive we were planning to the WA class would have added stops. So, while we saved and then moving to Maryland from Long Island it's an added 5 hours to the trip. We have made our reservations at a hotel about 20 minutes from the class to save some money. We are so looking forward to it. See you there.

I think we're going to fly, but you're right about hotels. Downtown is extremely expensive. I think we still might stay a little closer to where the class is held, but I'm not sure how close. I think it might be a job for the "priceline negotiator." I've had some pretty good success using it in the past. Hopefully, we can name a price & drop those rates a bit...Any ideas about cab fares in the area?

The lowest price I've been able to find in Boston that is within walking distance to the Hilton is at the Park Plaza for $145 a night. Believe it or not that is a super rate. I actually didn't believe it the first time I saw it.
Forget the cabs, ridiculously overpriced. If you or anyone wants to do this on a shoestring here's what you do. Get your room at the Motel 6 in Braintree, It's maybe 15 miles out of downtown Boston. It's a relatively clean hotel, I've stayed there before and their rooms are listed at $65 a night. You won't find any lower in the area. The hotel is convienently located right next to the red line train station. I think it costs something like 2 bucks to ride in to Boston. There is even an airport shuttle that will take you from Logan to Braintree for $7. If it's a couple staying or two to a room you could probably keep the costs down to under $40 a day each.

Hi Wenzell_777,
No idea about the cabs. We used Choice Hotels and our discounts for a decent price. But, now that you mentioned it, Priceline is a good method. But I think you must commit to it with no changes right? I know we made all the plans and are ready to go, but you never know.

I don't know where the class is... I spent a summer @ MIT in 2001, and went to a job interview at the nuclear reactor there in 2004.
Cabs: Cost me roughly 30 bucks from logan to MIT. this was covered, so I really did not care...
Hotels: Only stayed in one, the MIT hotel. I am sure it is several hundred per night, but it is a pretty cool place
Other things: If you are into science/technology, the MIT museum is pretty cool.. I think it cost $10 for non-employees (when I was there it was free for employees). I could spend days in there.
The boston museum of science was so cool, I could spend weeks in there. 3 floors of hands on exhibits, including http://www.mos.org/sln/toe/ where they start an indoor lightning storm. You are protected by a faraday cage, but the thunder is super cool.
That concludes my nerdy input...

Wow. Thanks for the good tips. That may be the best option. Still a couple of months away, but we'll probably make a decision soon.

With Priceline Negotiator, you select areas you'd like to stay, and the hotel is chosen for you based on the specifications, (1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star) Once you select, you make an offer & it automatically sends that offer to hotels meeting your criteria. You can't select a hotel, it selects for you. You must commit to the hotel once it's selected for you & you're charged immediately. No backing out, but you can get some great prices...& it's fun to see where you'll end up!
