Could someone please explain to me why this goal and forum are so seductive. I live in a nice house that I hoped never to move from. I have minimal carpentry skills. I set out to build a humble tack shed for the gear associated with my daughter's 4H horse and goat projects. And yet...I have my first model of a building similar to the hunting cabin shown in the student pictures. I find myself looking in the real estate section at mountain land, (I already live in rural colorado on 14 acres), I fantasize about various features of different styles of log homes, I read articles on wood stoves and homesteading. I haunt this forum in the middle of the night, looking for new posts as if it were internet porn and I was recently released from prison. Help me before something serious happens. But really, I am trying to understand the visceral response this concept seems to create in many people. I am interested in some of the reasons why, beyond financial freedom and affordable home ownership.

financial freedom and affordable home ownership.
That was a couple of the main reason's for us. We're young & newly married, so we had 2 choices, sign up for a 20 year mortgage, or take the class & build it ourselves.
This'll be the first X-mas in the new house, so far its great :)

A safe place to live is something human beings have needed for 50,000 years or more. A safe place to cook, make tools, make children, and raise those children was critical to the survival of the human species and what got us out of the trees (that and burining things of course).
I believe the very deep emotional response that people have to this subject stems from that. It's baked right into our DNA.
When you look at a finished BNP log home, sitting at the top of a hill or whatever, hidden off the beaten path, deep within your subconscience some little voice says "THAT is a safe place!".
I say go with it! :)

You're the one that compares what we are doing to internet porn. It looks like you already know everything there is to know about the visceral draw that has us here. If financial freedom and affordable home ownership isn't enough, how about ... on second thought that oughta be enough. It is kinda cool building something that most people don't think they can build. Perhaps the only thing better than doing it is knowing you have some part in convincing someone else that they can do it also.
