Thelognoob has recently rejoined us after a 9 year hiatus. He started this thread back in the old days and got zero response. I know the request was for links, but to be honest, I wouldn't be able to figure out how to do a link if the instructions were printed on page 3 of my computer. Well I haven’t been a big contributor here just a huge lurker that has read every thread in this section and still have so much questions.

Big news today!
The lady is Pregnant! For 10 years we’ve been trying, had given up, and then now out of the blue we’re expecting.
My motivation level is through the roof, I just wish there were more build threads/ blogs to follow on this side. With my company I’m obsessed with details so I understand and make correct decisions so we can push forward.
I thank everybody on here
Esp the current builders who do post on this side, we are hungry for info and all are trying to self educate to make the class that much more understandable.

There’s a few online blogs of builds but not too many, I will keep trying to educate myself until next year I can take the course!

Congrats on the pregnancy- it will change everything. I was a lurker for years. I'm writing about our build experience [see link below] because I had the same questions- couldn't see how it was possible that LHBA could be done, but we're doing it. Here's a video (https://youtu.be/ji4UyQh6Bcs) my wife helped me make of stacking one log (because I always wanted to see this as a noob, too). Only thing it doesn't show is cutting and peeling the log. And it doesn't show the log falling after it slipped out of the strap (but I posted that separately on my same channel- it's cool to watch a 5,000 lb log hit the dirt). :)

Yeah, Imgur is the best right now.

I remember way back when I used flickr, then that site kind of fell out of favor as the "it" photosharing site. Then it was Photobucket, same deal, fell out of favor and had an annoying habit of breaking links to photos. Imgur is the best right now, though there latest update seemed to make it harder to manage albums...

Please keep posting pics! How are you stacking them , with a telehandler? How long is it taking to set a log/course? I’m sure lots of us noobs would love to know!

Congrats btw, house will be awesome!

Telehandler seems to be the method of 90% of the builds. There's a couple builds with poles happening on the "other side."

So many variables to stacking these logs in a timely manner. IF you have rebar cut, logs staged, no windows or doors you're trying to work around, few knots that throw off your measurements, you can move with ease. The most I've stacked in a day is 8, 12 for a weekend. But that started off having my logs prepped and rebar already cut. 4 logs in 3hrs on the first day, then on that afternoon I only stacked about 4 logs in 5hrs. It varies. I had two guys helping me that day. Dropped my first course of logs down in about 6hrs total. Hope that helps.

I did buy a Dewalt cordless utility drill and a wood owl bit (review is on the member side). Its handy and fast combination for drilling.

There is no good reason to wait before taking the class. My life changed in several ways after class and we didn't start this build til a long time later.

If I had waited til it was time to build this house before taking the class I would not have been set up to make it all work AND I woulda missed out on all the LHBA type stuff I did for all those years.

If you are on the fence, you'll thank yourself later if you fall off on the LHBA side... sooner the better.

I started my build within 4 weeks after taking the class-had less than $20k saved for my build- closed on my land after putting a few thousand down, then started cutting trees. paid a few thousand for a tractor, about $5k for water/power, then about $2200 for concrete, and some other stuff, and now that money is almost gone. I put away a small amount each month (about 1/2 a house payment), but I'll need about $3-5k for the roof coming up. It's a little scary wondering if I'll be able to pay for whatever the next step is, but so far, so good. keep plowing ahead, I'm figuratively paving my own road here. I went and saw prissypink's build up in Nashville, but that's about it- no experience building other than that.

I modified the stock plans myself using a free linux program- I forget the name, but it's on my "about" page on my blog. Basically I wiped out the interior of the plans and all the doors and windows, but kept the roof/foundation/logs all the same. We put 2 beds on the main floor, and some more beds upstairs. We planned it so we can do all our living on the main floor- laundry, kitchen, entertainment, bathroom, and let the adult kids climb the stairs. Once they move out, it'll be sort of a bunkhouse for grandkids, guests, storage. But they have some issues, so it'll be a while before we get to that point.

Same could be said about planting.... Wish I had planted an acre or a few of fruit trees when I bought my place. That was old man advice given to me, "Plant some fruit trees first, before you do anything else." ~Big Mike

Which reminds me... When colder weather comes is a great time to plant trees but big box stores market that stuff in spring. My neighbor bought all kinds of fruit trees and bushes for huge discounts about a month ago.

Back in spring/summer I was behind someone who was returning a blueberry bush. It looked awful but alive and the woman at the counter gave them cash back and threw it in the trash. I tried to buy it and she told me I couldn't but I could have it, and to pull it out of the trash before something got tossed on it. I still haven't planted it but it looks great now with new growth.

I helped Plumblevel set one upper level loft joist. That was the extent of my experience when i started stacking. How long after the class did I start? Which time? lol Long story, but I poured the foundation in Fall 2014, but after a few failed log purchasing experiences, real progress started this past summer.

Bedrooms upstairs or downstairs more common?? My build is a 30x30, so I'm limited to one bedroom downstairs. Undecided on the layout of the loft.

Southern Yellow Pine logs. That's what was available in softwood. "Available" is a relative term. STRAIGHT Un-milled oak or otherwise in hard to come by. Twisty, limb filled trees are everywhere, though.

Ronnie, how tall are the walls to the cap log, and also how much wall will the owner end up with on the loft area? I'm doing a 30x30 and was curious what I was looking at dimensionally.

I also noticed a two piece cap log on there. Can you help me understand what's going on there?

Walls are around 13', loft will have 3-4' side walls. Load bearing logs had to be stamped, only one of the long logs met the grade criteria, so we had 4 shorter logs stamped and did 2 piece cap logs

Do you have any pictures of you setting RPSLs on any of your builds? I plan to frame and deck the 1st floor before setting logs, but just started thinking that those floor joists @16" OC are gonna make for a tight fit. Any secrets, or am I over thinking it?

Well, my concrete RPSL columns didn't jive with the 16" OC for my TJI joists, so I left one out in the middle. I'll probably end up mounting them to the RPSL somehow.

Just cut a hole in your floor and header off your joists with a few hangers. That's what I did at least.

It's been my experience that coolness factor has a direct correlation to pain in the butt factor

You guys worry too much about water. If water and logs was actually an issue, all these real log home builders out there would be using larger overhangs. Just contemplate that next time you reach for the tinfoil hat.

And Ronnie, pain in the butt is temporary. Coolness is forever. At least that is what I told the kids every time something turned out to be harder and took way longer than initially thought.

I'm new here sorta and ready to build next year. I live in Oregon. Could you quickly run through how I go about talking with the forestry department to obtain trees? I plan on building in Oregon. Is it easy to talk with them?

My experience over the last 30 years or so is that everyone with any clout in any of those darned agencies always ends up saying "Until a few years ago it was possible to get a "blah, blah, blah, suchandsuch" permit to get house logs but that doesn't fly anymore. Have you tried "Soandso Logging, out in Treeville"? I hear they are into some nice Lodgepole Pine."

No kidding. That seemed to be how it was just after I took the class from Skip, and it is still that way. Over the years I have helped several folks (as well as myself) try to find some of those public logs but never had a bit of success here in sunny southern Oregon. I got the logs for our current place off of a Craigslist ad.

(I'm wearing my harness- I think 18' is past the limit where I want to risk a fall. 17' is fine, but not 18'. Falling from 18' is crazy talk).
this is log #42, layer 11. I'm just finishing #43. I think we only have 3 layers left on our walls.

And like everyone says- just about the time you become an expert on the part of the build you are working on (and get really sick of it), is when you are finished with that part.

John17three and a lot of folks use imgur.
I use flickr- any picture I take gets auto-uploaded to my cloud. I can then change the settings from private to public and share the image that way.

nobody better be using Photo$uck-it....they did us wrong, and we should never forgive them. feel free to replace '$' with the consonant of your choice.... :)

Here are some of the back porch we are doing with a sweet ass truss I built that can out super cool so far. It will be finished once I get the rafters on and tie them into the cross braces. My idea for that is to drill a half inch pilot hole and use 5/8 all thread and a huge screw to screw them together.

ha ha! no.

But I vary between wishing I put the RPSL's on the outside of the house, and being glad they are inside - out of any potential weather. I like the look of them being on the inside, but the boss would like having more square feet of living space. this corner lifting pole eats into her square feet, and yes, every square foot counts. :)

I had totally forgotten about this side of the forum since I became a member last year.

One of my biggest reasons to post on here is get questions answered and to get motivation from all the great encouragement from everyone. Really helps when the gas tank is empty.

Big accomplishment today...got roof covered for winter. Guess it is about time I tossed some pictures in-
My wife and I went thru the class years ago after our place burned up.
Up until that point our total building experience was- one chicken coop and a dog house.
The class was life changing.
Now let me see if I can get these pictures to post.
Unfortunately there is a lot of crap - vehicles etc stick in these. But you should be able to see the house if you can get past the clutter.

Oh yea- I was should post a picture of how much it settled after ten years..( zero ) nada. So there are no pictures.
I will say we noticed a smidgen of shrinkage - like maybe 1/8" - in diameter- not to be confused with settling.
So where I had scribed drywall to fit tight against the contour of the logs in the down stairs bathroom eventually a small gap (very small) was exposed.
Fixed by stapling rope around the edges.

I can't emphasize the importance of this class enough.
I realize this is a picture thread so I don't want to wreck the flow.

If you'da built at a more conservative pace, those scribed cuts would have stayed tight.

Every thing seems bigger, with the upstairs half loft separated by a railing from the down stairs and surrounded by glass (and sliding glass doors--to a deck) on the high side. Btw, I'll be out (for my final trip next year, I forget where you are from, but you and any other readers are welcome to come by when I'm there.

I coulda sworn last year was your final trip out. That's OK. Have as many final trips as you want. The more the merrier.

We are doing a trip on Route 66 from LA to Chicago this next summer (Route 66 when we are 66). Plan to make it to your place again if it works into the map and schedule.

If not, maybe we'll meet up at cousin Tom's place or your place in Ohio, or Iowa or. wherevrnell you finally settled down at. Hug your Mom for me... She"sa peach.
