Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all the great insight, I am very thankful...

I have a question concerning log length

I plan on taking the advice and building a square home. 30'x30'. Do I need to have mostly 30'-32' logs for each wall or can I join them together. I understand you can join them, but is this a "best practice" or would I be better off having 30 footers?

Thanks!

butting short logs together might invite rot in that joint if not well protected, & trying to match up the tapers of 2 logs might be a bit difficult along a single course of logs.

Some members use other methods to use shorter logs, like vertical log, or piece-en-piece, & some even use shorter sections & build the window/door openings as they go up.

Just throwing out some idea's for you.

On a 30X30 home, I'd suggest at least 35 foot logs, so that you can have a reasonable margin to work with. It's always easier to make a long log short than to make a short log long!
