When I built my timberframe I used a product called "Land Ark Finishing Oil". You brush it on your timbers or logs and it penetrates and seals them as well as brings out some nice color. Also, you can get it with Mildewcide and UV protector. It is a citrus oil base so it smells great and makes your logs brown up instead of "silvering" which I prefer as a matter of taste. The fellow who makes it is wonderful to talk to. I am no affiliated at all, just a product I used and really liked. It is much more expensive than just linseed oil, but an extra $100 for the entire house it worth it to me for the look and protection.
