Hi, we are planning to build a small 1000ft/sq or so log cabin next year (and hoping to get into a class before then) but want to start cutting logs soon. On our property we have lot's of very nice spruce trees, some pine along with several species of hardwoods.
Since this first little cabin is more for a learning experience (along with a cabin to spend some weekends at the beach) would the spruce logs be ok???
I would like to save the pine for when/if we build a larger house.
Also, should they be pealed as soon as they are cut??
Thanks in advance for any input.
Ray

Spruce is OK to use. (see: http://loghomebuilders.org/cedar-logs-or-spruce-logs ) And yes, you want to peel them asap and get them off the ground, preferably in a shaded area. Rolling them 180? every so often will help them dry evenly.

I would also get some old tin or something like it and put over my pile with some bricks or stovewood on top of the tin. This would keep the majority of water and sunlight off the logs giving you a lighter, straighter and cleaner log stack for when you build. Also, I have used "anchor seal" for end grain sealing, It works great and keeps the logs from "Butt Checking". It is cheap and easy to use, just brush it on the ends of the logs and it seals up the ends keeping the ends from drying much faster and thus splitting apart.
