Fireplaces

Is there a best location or a preferred location that you should position your fireplace... As of right now I have always picture my fireplace to be in the center of a exterior wall like in my living room for an example, or should you offset it because of a possible center post ? A real fire place, I assume you would have to cut a whole section out of a exteroir wall if you build it like association teaches you ? Or would you ?

My design was adapted from the log (pole) home
next to my parents (sadly, it sold) B&P log home.

The fire place is in the middle of the house. It is a focal point and all sides
radiate heat into the house and no area is far from the heat source.

For an outside wall, maybe Richard has some suggestions.

center is best. If you put it near the center, you also don't have to worry about ice jams piling up on your chimney. but Skip put one (a stove) in a corner. I suppose he was only wanting the ambiance, and not using it for primary heat, as his DV propane heater takes care of the house nicely.

One thing about placing it in the center, you can clear the peak of the roof and get better draft without a tall chimney outside.
