I purchased a log home last year and have noticed that some of the outside chinking between the logs has come out. I am going to purchase the correct product to fix this. My question is not how to apply, but where to apply. Do I just fill in the hole and a little bit around so it adheres to the stuff that's already there? Or, do I have to take out everything and start new?
I don't know very much about this stuff....it's my first home that I've owned by myself.

I think it depends on what type of chinking you'll be using to patch it with..
Most synthetic stuff will adhere to the wood & other chinking, that's what it's made to do. If you go synthetic just follow the manufactures info, most likely say use some backer rod/foam rod if the gap is too large or deep.

However, if you're planning on using mortar chinking, you may have to put something in there for the mortar to adhere to like a nail, screw, wire mesh etc.

What type of log home is it & what kind of chinking is in there?
