Home made windows

Has anyone made thier own windows for thier log home. That is something I have been toying with in mind. From a woodworking standpoint I know I can do it. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I haven't done it, but you're right. It'd be pretty easy to do. Mind you, they could only be singe pane, as there is little chance you'll pull off multi-pane and not get internal condensation. If you are building where codes are strict, they may not allow you to use single pane, unrated, homebuilt windows. (and you thought this country was free, eh?)

Hey check online for your local habitat.
I got 3 brand new windows for 200 bucks.
One them was a pella that rolls outward i think that one goes for around 200 ore more alone.
Like we learned in class hunt for deals i do.
I think if i was in the woods far away in alaska.
I would do that but to many good window cheep.
I find that after you buy wood to build and time etc its kinda of a pain.
But if your good with wood and can pull it off try it out.
I figure it helps me and it also builds a home for the poor.

I just checked a local online buy sell and trade site and it seems there are a lot of good deals on used windows. Anyone using used windows on thier log home?

I am using slightly used windows... seems like there are a lot
of windows installed and ripped out or not installed at all that
are the wrong color, size, spec, not up to a certain code...

I have 4 pretty good sized windows for free!

Im not sure if there is a local website in the States, but here in Canda we have www.usedcanada.com from there you can click on any city and it is just loaded with Free Stuff, Stuff for Trade, and cheap stuff for Buy & Sell ........

I have bought many items and sold many items on usedottawa.com

Best place for windows, lumber, tools etc etc.

Oh and its all free, to post an ad and to buy.

Well, now you're stompin' around in my old backyard.


Yes, you can do it, but you probably already know:

*It's cost-effective to buy mis-matched, returns, overstocks, etc.
*It is labor intensive
*You will need to make or buy your own insulated glass panels.


I have vinyl windows in my storage shed. I can't recall the cost off
the top of my head, but they were mostly salvage (overstock, returns,
etc.) and probably cost a lot less than if I had made my own.

You can make your own evacuated, IR shielded glass panels pretty
cheap, to code, probably better than anything else on the market, but;
"how much time 'ya got?"

Mine mostly came from the annual boneyard sale at a local custom window company. Huge savings on gorgeoous windows. Then I designed my window package around them. Totally worth it. Also turned on two other LBHAmembers to this place and they also found more than half their windows there. I know most major cities have large companies like this and am sure a few phone calls inquiring about miscuts and overstocks will prove to be useful. Doors also!

Back in the day (5 or 6 years ago), I worked on a construction project. A nice Marriot Hotel in Redmond, WA. When we took delivery of the windows for the hotel, we ended up with ten (10) 3' x 6' double pane (gas filled) windows with green aluminum frames. They were the wrong size. The boss said to take them home since they were already figured in to the bill. Back then I had no storage and just lived in a tiny apartment! They must have sat there for a week before someone finally took them home.

How about kicking one's own backside for the next few years missing out on THAT deal!

Like the class teaches us, deals are out there!

I got my windows for free... Once you pu the word out to enough people,
good things happen. A person in our parish told us they were replacing
most of their windows that were installed for less than a year because of
some code issue. They are perfectly good vinyl windows. Windows are
on Craigs list for free or very cheap all hte time.
