I attended a 2003 class and am hopeful that I can make the february 2008 class. ( I was really sick during the 2003 class and didn't get much out of it)

When I am finally ready to build, it will be in Tallahassee, FL . I am curious about experiences building in that part of the country. Permits, access to logs (types available, cost), climate concerns, etc etc...

Anyone with knowledge to share?...

FLCowgirl had her permits and lof info and was just about ready to build south of Talahassee when she lost her funding. I haven't seen her post in quite some time but if and when she does, Jennifer had quite a knowledge base built up concerning building there in central FL.

I used to live in Winter Haven, FL. We built a home there in 1990. It was not a log home, but we spent BIG bucks on a brick veneered house making sure it was energy efficient, hurricane proof, and termite proof. As it turned-out, it was none of the above. Our biggest problem was termites eventhough we had termites "protection". The entomologists told us that in Florida, if you don't have termites, you will. I'm not an expert but building a log home as recommended by the LHBA will probably be fine, but I'd make certain to get it off the ground exactly as specified or better. A few years ago, when we got hit head-on by 3 hurricanes within 6 weeks, we packed-up and moved to Wyoming. I'm sure that if we had had a rugged log home, things would have been very different. We're looking forward to doing the right thing here in WY.

IIRC, FLCowgirl is no longer in FL.

I'm sure there are other members in FL though- it'd be nice to network with some of you as I spend a lot of time in Sarasota visiting family. I'm about to begin building in middle GA.
