I would like to know if mixing species of wood would be a bad idea. Maybe oak and pine or cedar. I am wanting to harvest local tree tops from the loggers in my area. I live in S.E. MO & there is alot of logging going on. They just cut up the tops for fire wood so I thought maybe I could build a log home out of them. I know that the expansion and contraction rate varies quite a bit between hard and soft woods, but with the great chinking materials available I thought it may be feasable to use mixed woods. Thanks in advance!

It's been bounced back and forth whether you can or not, but I believe LHBA recommends not doing it if at all possible. At very least, I believe, if you are going to, you should stack all of one species that you have, then switch to the other, instead of random mixing. Far better still, would be to stack wall logs of one species, (I'd use the pine or cedar) and then have your girders, ridgepole, support logs, joists and rafters made of another species.
