View Full Version : Cedar Logs or Spruce Logs

I just purchased some property that has a lot of white cedar trees of log size and some spruce trees of log size. Both the cedar and spruce have a lot of lower branches, so I expect them to be very "notty." Will these make good log home building logs and if yes, is one better than the other? Thanks!

Both cedar and spruce logs are useful for your log home if they meet the criteria. Recommended minimum diameter 10". Straight with preferrably less than 1" of taper per 10 ft. Long enough to span the length or width of your house plus 3 ft. This is all discussed in the class.

JAC,

I just got back from class today and they talked all about what is the best characteristic of a tree for a log home.

I plan on building in the UP in the Crystal Falls area

Hi, JAC--

As Richard said, either species would be generally acceptable. We built with Englemann spruce because that was what we could find, and we like them.

Hey UPers! Great to hear from someone close by. Let me know if you need help! Also, what did you think of the class and membership value so far?

JAC,

The class was great! Answered so many questions. I am still waiting to get into the members forum... they say it takes a couple of days...
It was a great experience. Steve and Ellsworth did a wonderful job and concentrated their efforts on great information.

Are you planning on going?

PS I have tried to change my profile to Yoopers, but I think I am stuck.

Congrats Yoopers! You have earned the LHBA green badge of courage. (see it attached next to your name). The members forum will bombard you with oodles of valuable information. IMO, the class was just the tip of the iceberg.

Oh Btw, did they mention at the class that all new members must shave their heads? Yup... sometimes they forget to mention it. It is just a initiation thing and it will grow back.

welcome home,
Kola (enter smiley face)

Okay, surely someone expected I'd bite on this one...

Pat, glad you enjoyed the class. Some great experience, eh? : ) Welcome to the Association. Lucky you, being up on the UP. Sure gorgeous country up there.

Kola, Skip must have forgotten to tell us about the shaved-head part of the initiation when we joined, but Jeff's never more than about a quarter-inch from compliance anyway, so it's probably all good.

Louanne, if shaving my head would give me a shot at hair as beautiful as yours, I'd do it in a heartbeat. LOL : )

Take care, everybody! Sara : )

That reminds me Kola, I don't think you ever got around to posting your shaved head picture. C'mon, let's have it! ;)

Ok Greg, I guess fair is fair (Ellsworth and Steve both did the styling although I am still recovering from the mental trauma):

I tried to edit a previous post, it was then partially deleted and now it moved down here.

anyway, I had posted saying that I was only kidding about chopping off the hair and woud feel terrible if someone did that. I could have a angry wife or husband hunting me down. eek. lol.
