After stumbling on to this site and stalking the forum for about two years, my wife and I are mentaly commited to taking the class. If they have any after the holidays ( Jan-Mar 2008 ). I have a few questions, actualy about 200, that I was hoping someone might be kind enough to answer.

1.Has anyone dealt with Kitsap county, and how was it?

2.I know completion costs can vary widely, but is it at all reasonable to expect to have a three bedroom ( lots of rugrats, four ) house completed for around $100,000? Just the structure. No mortgage is more important to us than hardwood floors etc.

3.We have found a potential piece of property. Is it a mistake to puchase land before the class?

1. No idea sorry, I'm not in that area...

2. That's a very good budget & you can have a very nice home for that. We are estimating a bit lower than that for ours completed, with hardwood floors & other nicer features (hopes to sell the first one).

3. As long as you know the local building codes/regulations shouldn't be a big deal. Most people that take the class are interested in land with no restrictions or protective covenants, so you are free to build how/when you want. From my experiences so far, building on a flat piece of land is so much easier.

You should be able to build a nice place for that amount.

I would definitely take the class before buying land. Your whole perspective will change. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about log homes the class will educate you on them and what to look for in land etc.

And yest flat ground with about 40 feet minimum on all sides of the house is much better if possible. Hills sides are doable but can be more work depending on how its graded.

Good to have you onboard! Yes take the class first, and yes you can build alot with that money especially if you're creative. I think RockEngineer is from Port Orchard, ask him about the county. I'd like to know too. I might be building again over there in the future. pinecone pam
