Hi,
I'm the new owner of a log home. The current stain color is very dark for my tastes. Is there an easy way to remove the current stain and restain the home in a lighter color?
Is paint even an option with a log home?
Any info would be great!
Thanks

Welcome to LHBA STMRepair.
You might have a hard time getting an answer to your question here, since the most common log home flavor here is "all natural à la mode" meaning the style taught by LHBA doesn't typically include stains and sealers, but someone might come up with something for you to try.
Strictly speaking from hypothesis, you could try, (in an inconspicuous place) a weak bleach solution, maybe Oxyclean?, or maybe even Castrol Super Clean. I'd imagine acetone applied generously, then drawn out might work well, but I don't know how you could safely vaccuum it out with something like a shop vac, without the risk of igniting it.
Sorry to say, whatever the solution may be, I doubt it's going to be easy. :(

Congrats on your log home purchase. It sounds like you are the proud owner of a kit home. This particular site does not deal with kit homes. The building methods taught here, do not require the use of exterior treatments, when the methods are followed accordingly.
You may want to check with LHOTI http://www.logassociation.org/
Perhaps this may be somewhat beneficial. http://www.logbuilding.org/finishing_log_homes.pdf
SMT,
I think it would be helpful to find out what specific type of stain was used. And check to see if a hardcoat sealer was used overtop. Could you ask the previous owner?
lhoti? what do they know about loghomes? jk :?

You could try corncobbing, but that gets messy when done inside.
