that wont attract bugs or mold growth? I have done research on the www and have found so many different answers to this then in the next search found several reasons not to use those methods. Does anyone know anything for sure? We dont have a big enough budget to use one method only to find out we did the wrong thing and now have to redo it all over again. At the moment we are using raw linseed oil. Can you tell me if it would be better to use the boiled with turpentine instead? Please help, Im desperate for answers!

I would not use the linseed oil. From what I have heard it can help cause mold and mildew.

You would probably be better served by a real log home preservative made by someone like
http://www.permachink.com/
http://www.sashcosealants.com/
http://www.weatherall.com/
http://www.nam.sikkens.com/

Permachink, Sascho and Sikkens seem to be the big three.

Behr makes an exterior sealant and uv protection coating that works great. We did the outside of our place in that over a year ago and it hasn't faded or anything and we have gotten ALOT of snow and rain since then.
Its called "waterproofing wood finish" and you can get it in the big buckets and save some money. I think it took maybe two buckets to do two coats on a 30x30 structure.
It darkens the logs by one shade and gives them a low lustre, it turned out really nice.

Heres a pic of what the logs look like using the behr product.

Thanks Matt for your info! We had wondered if anyone had used these type of stained sealers on their logs. Now atleast we know of one other person...
