Hello, I am building a log home that has a prow front. The one wall will be a 14 course log wall intersecting a conventional framed log sided wall and I am looking for some connection information for this framing condition. My concern is the differential settlement between the log wall and the conventional framed wall. I do know the settlement will not be the same for the two walls and that it should be some type of slip joint condition. Another concern is how this will be sealed up to prevent air infiltration into the home. If anyone has a detail or can describe how this is done in the industry, it would be greatly appreciated.

jmusser,
someone here may be able to help you out, but so you know, you've stumbled across the wrong forum for discussing settling issues. LHBA teaches a non-settling method of log home building.
Good luck with that prow.

One method that is used is to have a log column at the interface. Dove tail the logs and have a notch reverse dovetail in the column. It is a lot of intricate work but can be successful in allowing settlement and stopping infiltration.
You may want to post this on the www.lhoti.com forums to get a larger variety of answers from hand crafters and kit builders.
