I just wanted to pop on here and give my 2 cents worth on our class and trip as well. If you haven't gone to class and are kinda' on "the fence" as to whether taking the class or not....sign up!! My wife, Nerine, and I finished class February 18th and left with our heads swelled from information (belly was full of secret cookies!). A heaping amount of information to take in but easily digestible.
So...how do I feel now that I dropped about $2500 for our trip (this includes lodging and such, the class/membership dues are priced excellent in my opinion ). Airlines lost all our luggage even. Only had the clothes on our backs! BUT DAMN I FEEL AWESOME!!
As any person embarking on a new venture, I too had some self doubt but I fully believe with all my being that this is a realistic goal for us.
*Ellsworth- Great teacher and was able to convey everything over in terms that I could understand. Ellsworth has an air about him that is intriguing. You can just tell there is some very deep thoughts and a lot more to learn from this guy than building log homes. Seems very enlightened for lack of better words, and not just in a political sense. Mr. E seems like the person you would like to sit around a camp fire with jaw jack for hours with. Thank you Ellsworth for what you provide to us. Hopefully our paths will cross again.
*Steve- Awesome guy here too. Great sense of humor and very welcoming. Well spoken and taught class in the same way as Ellsworth. Like his counterpart this guy seems to be a wealth of information and knowledge aside from log homes. Very easy to talk with. Both great guys to be around. I look forward to seeing both again in a setting that isn't the "classroom".
* Class- Excellent money invested. The class was structured well and kept a great flow. Just about every time I had a question I would bite my tongue and sure enough it would be answered. Breaks are there at your leisure and every topic was covered. You are welcomed to ask questions at any time and no one is snickering or making you feel odd for doing so. I do not honestly see why one would have to take a log home building class that is any longer than this. If you are somewhat competent and pay attention it is all layed down as simple as could be. Like most folks we do not have a bunch of money at any given time to just plop down for stuff like this. But I am glad we saved and did so. I have no regrets at all. even though we lost our notepads and such with our luggage the class provides the Manual and a CD for you. We took all the notes we needed to in our manuals.
I am still upset a bit a Northwestern losing our luggage but they made it right with reimbursment for money we spent on clothes and toiletries. The day we left the class to catch a flight home; we show up for our flight and our luggage THEN showed up! Go figure.
We stayed at the Gaylord Bed and Breakfast. Let me say that this was a great little place to stay. Cay was extremely cool and the house is very charming! The breakfast served every morning at 7:30 was delish! Definitely gourmet, not what most normal folks eat everyday before work! Stuffed french toast with all the accruments. Next moring it was this tasty mexican omlete thingy with mango salsa. Awesome food. Great room tayhat was spotless. Whirlpool tub and our private entrance. Cay and her visiting sister also made us a bag lunch everyday that could honestly be used for LUNCH AND DINNER!! Thanks Cay. Oh, and the bag lunch is not some luch meat on white bread. Cay makes a "mean" grilled chicken hogie and some other things. :)
Our class was nice and although we stayed to ourselves everyone was friendly and approachable. Class was about 35 students or so. every seat filled. Young, older, everyone represented from race to age. From East coast to West coast and even Canada.
Great experience and hopefully those of you just browsing like we did for many months decide to take the leap. Trust me when I tell you this... You can not just browse this forum and learn to build a cabin. No you can't, I appreciate your confidence in yourself, but unless someone "let's you in" on things you need to do yourself a favor and attend class. Soooo many things not covered here in general discussion (and shouldn't be for that matter) and not available elsewhere. And I am a pretty resourceful person and you would still need this class.
Thanks for the space and see you all around on the forums.
Best Wishes,
