View Full Version : Another chinking question

I understand that with mortar chinking, the retaining nails are driven about 2" apart into the bottom log and that when the logs dry, it usually causes a gap between the chinking and the top log.
Where I live, the rain sometimes blows sideways and would get on the walls no matter what the overhang. It appears that rain blown in on the walls would run in that crack and be trapped behind the chinking.
Why couldn't the retaining nails be driven into the upper log and thereby (hopefully) the mortar would stick to the upper log and the shrinkage gap would form between the chinking and the lower log. This, it seems, would allow the water to run down the side of the wall.
Anyone tried this ?
