For anyone who has read my cautions about dealing with Larry Birchfield in Nebo, NC, here is more information you may want to consider.

After speaking with other customers of his, outstanding/unresolved issues seem to be the norm rather than the exception.

Even after several attempts to contact him, neither the attorney general nor my lawyer received a response.

Here are just a few of the outstanding issues:

1. No felt paper on the roof
2. Not one door seals properly, because of improper installation
3. Air leaks around every door frame
4. Caulking has failed in numerous places resulting in air infiltration
5. Thousands of dollars spent on electrical wiring, which was not installed during log installation, as promised, to meet local codes

If you make the mistake of hiring him to build your home, please, please write in every possible detail before signing a contract. Include a very strict timeline of completion, and action to be taken in every eventuality you can imagine.

Please contact me for any further information and suggestions.

SG,

Is this "Gentleman" a Kit home builder or a Butt and Pass style builder?

Just askin'!

I am planning to build my butt and pass here East of Lenoir NC in 2008, Lord Willing.

Got my acreage with trees on it and will be going through the various planning stages this year, cut my trees next Dec. and getting going in Feb or so.

Quinton, a kit home can be butt and pass. In fact a lot of kit homes are butt and pass.

Quinton,
I would not let the story told here keep you from getting touch with Birchfield Log Homes. I have had numerous dealing with them and always very very satisfied. I check into the other and found all inspections had passed and the windows were replaced due to altitude. Even after the window manufacturer told him they would warrant the first one in, they changed to a hurricane proof window. A contractor does not go through this trouble if he so bad. I would give them a call when your ready, nice folks and will do you right. Last I checked, there was a lein placed against this guys house for not paying the contractor, so that tells you something.
