We recently purchased a log home with exposed wood beams running the length of the interior. Some of the interior walls have drywall and the previous owner (who also built the home) didn't do a very good job of completing the trim work as you can see in the picture below.

I'm wondering if there is something I could do to fill in the gaps between the drywall and wood beams. I'm sure the best way would be to put in new drywall that is cut properly, but I'd prefer to use some type of trim or filler that could be painted the same color as the walls.

Wow, what a hack job. Too bad, it would have been quite easy to do right when the rock was being installed. (looks like he probably had some sort of plan to enclose that area, by the looks of the board)

Well, I guess you could just spackle it shut. You may need some backer, like crumpled newspaper or sprayed foam in the voids. Just be sure to mask the beam when you do, to keep spackle (or foam) from getting on it's exposed area. Might take a few fills and sandings to get it looking nice, just take your time and work it up a bit at a time. I'd use some paper joint tape over the larger holes to help prevent any chances of later cracking.

Seems like I've seen somebody somewhere use a really thick rope around a log for trim.

Very good idea.

I have seen rope applied as a trim in an LHBA home and it looked very nice indeed. I hope to employ the same with our home, however, I hope my gaps will be much smaller.

Take care,
