Instead of waiting around looking for the best deal on raw logs, why don't you start stockpiling logs one at a time? I'll admit that moving and storage is a situation, since you'll be moving 1 log at a time, but it might work out in the long run since spending money on the items you need it a lot easier than saving the money. (for the things you need). You can rent a uhaul for a few hours that's not too expensive to move them.

When I get my land, I will offer some trees for sale and you guys can come out and clear me a building site and build me a foundation. Then maybe I'll allow some selective cutting for the remainer. I should be able to generate enough pine logs to build a house or two from the trees on the land itself.

Then you guys can spend a year or two waiting for the logs to air dry all the while.

Which makes me think of a good solution. A group of people at this site can go in halvies or 6thies and buy a small piece of land that has enough trees for everyone in the group. If you're going to feel guilty for felling an acre of trees, you can just replant twice as many and resell them in the future.

I'm serious! There's no reason why everyone can't have a few logs stored in the garage by the weekend.....

thepizzaguy,

In the long run, the logs will probably be alot more expensive doing it that way, as you can't guarantee a good price over time.

When logs are had for a great price, the cost of transportation can add quite a bit of cost, but then again it may not.

I don't think anyone that is serious about building would "wait around for a good deal."

Good deals on logs come from hard work and alot of canvassing.

Building someone else's foundation is far more work than sourcing and having delivered usable logs. Your offer may not be too appealing to many builders.

By the way, in the LHBA's preferred building method, you don't need to wait around for logs to cure.

Just some thoughts.

A

I thought I mentioned that one at a time could be a situation, but I know for a fact, I could poach a few 10-12 foot logs that would fit into a log homes from the forest within twenty minutes. I do it every year for firewood.

Have a great one, and I wasn't being sarcastic, I was just trying to motivate people into taking action. I can't say, even with the plan I drew, that I am moving forward toward building my home.

12 foot logs will make very short walls, if you plan to build using a corner anchoring/locking method. Piece en Piece might be an alternative. But, I would venture to guess that sourcing logs "ad hoc" will present you with quite a few logistical problems in the end.

Honestly, you would do better to find a logger that can supply you with exactly what you need for your build. It will be less time and effort and less money if you do your research.

If I were you, I would use your impetus to save on logs to source all the other essentials you will need for your build. Logs will be one of the least costly things in the long run for you. All the other home systems together cost you more, unless you can scrounge them. The roof system will be the most expensive part of your build---if you can scrounge THAT, you are way ahead of the game.

The LHBA class covers these types of issues in good detail.
