Here are the two reasons why:
1) It started because I researched the sort of things I'll never fully understand: how easy it is to add code and parts to such items. Stuff which enables someone to remotely gain access to the device and/or hack into an existing home router / computer / phone.
2) Then Israel inserted explosives into pagers, and that got me thinking. The easiest way for a terrorist in America to deploy a similar tactic is to capitalize on second hand stores that accept donations. Buy a bunch of used TV, or new TVs. Modify them and then donate them to stores across a major city. Then wait until the Superbowl https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_watched_television_broadcasts_in_the_ United_States As examples launched into the world, the pager attack was a bad one. It made my purchasing rule become more hard fast.
Edited to add: and it doesn't have to be explosive, it could be a remote released chemical or biological. A potential lesson from this new round of Jewish / Muslim conflict: try to be the example that you want to live with / under -- you'll be more likely to live, and live satisfied with self.
3) House fires started remotely [/URL]through modified devices donated to, and then purchased from second hand stores.
