for the labor day weekend class 2017. Anyone have advice on things to bring for class? Extra notebooks? Extra Large Coffee cups?
I was just smart enough to bring along my off duty commander. I have been lurking and reading the public stuff for a couple years and talking about it with her. She is just starting to read here.

I can only suggest that you come prepared for a long day one. Whatever that entails for you, do it.

welcome aboard Grand and Commander:)
come to class well-rested. bring more than one writing utensil. come to class with an open mind. if you're anything like us, you'll hear a lot of new ways of thinking.
congratulations on this first big step!

Hello Tirnan, Also will be attending class next month. Been waiting a long time to sign up. Where you from? I am from California and looking to build here as well. Class may be long but I bet the time will fly by. Look forward to meeting you. Chris

The best piece of advice I can offer is, arrive (at least) one day earlier than day of the class, and leave (at least) one day after the class. I couldn't believe the number of people that left DURING the class I attended, so they could catch their flights. The time buffer eases the load on your mind, and allows you to take in so much more.

Wish I could Rod. We come in Thursday morning, but have to leave late Sunday night. I have been wanting to come to class for two years and am pretty certain that I have read almost all 92 pages of the public forum. If I lose a couple hours of class Sunday night I will cry in my beer just a little on the flight back, but I will be back if it is as good as I hope. If this works out well for us I am bringing 3 or 4 of my adult children back in the Spring for the next one. They are interested also. One is learning plumbing, another has a bunch of basic welding certs.
Chris, we are in Albuquerque NM but plan to build in the Idaho Falls ID area or possibly far northern ID in a few years. I grew up in So Cal (Malibu and Manhattan Beach mostly), and we had a house on the edge of the forest service in Mammoth. Most of our family is still out there, but my of duty commander (Bride for nearly 20 years) and I feel Idaho fits better with our desires and outlook, while still offering jobs we can work to support our potential sawdust habit.

Hi Rod, Thanks for suggestion. But early arrival could be dangerous in Vegas? I too will be in town a day early and departing Sun PM. Flight late enough that class time should not be missed. Class is close to airport. Do they really go for another full 12 hours the second day. Bet everyone's eyes are glazed over by late Sunday. It will still be great. They would have added a 3rd day if they needed it. I trust they have it down to a science. Secret is be a good boy Sat night.
Tirnan, sounds like you have a work crew already to go. ID sounds great. Look forward to meeting you next month.

I look forward to meeting you too. We plan to be very mellow Saturday night also. Probably just grab food and get the beauty rest.
I should be easy to spot. I'll be the bald fat old guy with glasses.

I think we finished up a little early the second day. I imagine they factor in hold ups and folks with a lot of questions. The only thing I would suggest is to carry a jacket or sweatshirt in case the room is cold. I enjoyed arriving the day before and leaving the day after. It was worth not worrying about delayed or missed flights.

Welcome and enjoy the class. I am excited for you. My wife and I arrived early and toured Hoover dam. Great experience. We soaked up as much as we could in class. I wrote in the notebook so did not use extra paper. I wish we had introduced ourselves to more of our classmates. The time is well spent.

I just wanted to take a moment to say hello to all of you planning to attend the next training in Vegas... I am looking forward to it! I live in the central valley of California. The drive for me is only 6 hours so I think I will drive rather than fly. I spent a good deal of time in the past couple of years looking at the forum posts and realized as I'm getting older, if I don't jump at the opportunity, the dream of owning my own log home will never be realized.
Tirnan, I also have a four man work crew, but unfortunately they range in age from 9 to 3. Looking forward to meeting you also Chris, a fellow Californian. Perhaps together we can figure out how to do this in California. From what I have read California seems a bit more complicated than doing this elsewhere.

Welcome DS... If you proceed like I did, your 4 man work crew will range from age 27 to 20.
Worked great for our family.

I waited until my crew grown a little more than 3 to 9. However if I could have done it back when they were little I would have. I was a tad too busy wearing Uncle Sams clothing of choice and visiting the world. LHN, our family has waited way too long. Time to get debt free, mortgage free, and free of everything we can be. I am hopeful that this is a step toward homes and lands for the grown kids also.

Work crews? What are those? Bet those would be nice once things get started. Maybe I should put BBQ and cold libations on my buy list and maybe work crews will appear. DS, too bad I didn't know about you before today. We could have done the carpool thing. Will be getting there a day early to save on airfare. Look forward to tackling this with a fellow Californian. Are you pulling into town on Thursday? Catch everyone later.

SouthWest just did us a favor! They had to cancel one leg of our Flight so I was able to rebook to Friday through Monday at the same rates. I think the room even got a bit cheaper and now we won't be in a rush to get out for the late flight Sunday.
They say God takes care of drunks and fools. I held up my end for both, I guess the Almighty is looking out for us.

Tirnan, may the good fortune follow you to the casinos. Maybe it will rub off on the rest of us in class. Sounds like a good core of attendees, I am excited to finally be pulling the trigger after years of flipping through this forum (well the front third of it shall we say.) Just wanted to thank the many here that were patient and supportive of my snails pace and sharing their responses. Staying around the corner from Harahs at the Westin. Thinking big buffet Thursday night.

Tirnan,
Went in February going again Labor weekend. Everything provided. Food, coffee, manuals, pens. Maybe a spiral notebook or legal pad. It's well organized. See you.

You two go get some sleep. You don't want to be the ones who asks all the goofy questions over on the member's side just because you hit the second day late and groggy.
And enjoy every minute of your vacation and your life changing class!

Lol, you 2! I'm getting more sleep here than at home, despite staying up to cash in my 2 coupons for my free adult beverages! We have 6 kids, we have 3 of them stool under roof, ans we have my mother. It makes for a busy household.
Nope, no texting in class. Im being good. I did do some simple math on my phone, though, without incident.

Well if them kids of yours really do stool under the roof, you sure must have a busy household. Your family needs a personal trainer or a maid or something.
Enjoy the rest of class and tell Ellsworth and Steve that I said hi.

Thank you SO much! I’m beyond excited! Do you have any finished photos of your house? I saw your blog photos and it looks beautiful!

we will definitely have finished photos when it actually is finished but its not :( :)
this year we'll finish interior framing in the loft, we'll lay the DF 2x6 T&G floor on the main floor and work in framing that in too. we'll pour the cement floor in the basement, among other things (get propane lines run, get closer to final grade, finish putting in main floor windows and doors, etc) lots to do yet!

Sounds like your getting close! Though I know all the finish work always seems to take so much longer then you think it will. :)
