I purchased this log home last year. Im currently in the process of blasting and rechinking. These small logs at the tops of the wall were stuffed with some sort of oakum or jute. It looks like moss, but when blasting its blowing out anyhow. Im trying to determine the best approach to sealing these up. In the past someone had tried morter, caulk and a mixture of other stuff. Iam not sure i will like the looks of a big wad of chinking around them, but need to seal them somehow.

I would appreciate any advice.

Use whatever you are chinking the rest with. Use small nails.

Make sure that you aren't chinking a "chinkless" cabin. A bandaid fix on a major problem.

I have not found much info on the method used to build this house. It was began in 1979 and finished in 1985. The bottom of each log was notched with a chainsaw in s "V" and then stacked. I believe the intention was to be chinkless, but years of drying and settling have caused some gaps. Some spots are still touching, others have an inch gap. Most seams have some sort of caulk or sealant in them. I plan to backer rod and chink them. Here is a pic that you can see the log ends on.

Backer rod and permachink would be my suggestion.

Permachink is latex with a grit that will stick to just about anything. It is fairly expensive but it is a permanent solution. Go to the permachink web site to get a feeling about process and the expense. I have a friend that backer rod and permachink and it still looks great after 11 years. It is of course water proof. It also comes in colors.
