Hi, new guy here. I'm signed up for the class in June. Quick question on the corners. Is there a reason why the logs go way past after they over lap each other? Is it possible to minimize the amount of log going past the corner? I just don't like the look of the ends sticking way out there. Thanks in advance for all the replies.

Purely cosmetic, cut em short, cut em long aint no difference at all.

Yes. I started very long - about 2.5 diameters. Then 2, now 1.5 log diameters...

With out log sticking out, it is the signature of a log home...

I've read that the standard is 1.5 log diameters. I was wondering when I read that if there was an engineering purpose to that rule of thumb or it was purely aesthetic.

Purely aesthetic,
However finish the build before you cut short. they are good for scaffolding and stuff and you really need to see what it looks like before you cut. I hear it is hard to put them back if you don't like the short look. I love em long but with decks and porches they can kind of get in the way.

Just cuz it looks cool.... But you can whack them off if you need the firewood.

Left one of mine on the outdoor kitchen long, flattened the top, cut in a couple of butt notches, and now I have a bench!

I was trying to make them all the same but the ladder was a little shaky.

We do understand why the ladder was shaky nut.

In all honesty, it wasn't the ladder that was getting shaky.

I've done random corners on a couple cabins. I call them "Beaver cut"

Thought I'd read the long over dangles (?) were for down the road if the log ends ever rotted or split you could cut off the end and the logs would look new again?
