Ah don't know about a quick learner an old learner.
I actually took the class in September 1989 from Skip.
So actually a LHBA member since 1989.
When I was 26.
Now I'm 53 mostly raised my family and am free to build.
So trying to refresh and remember and learn.

Okay people, just one month away...let the countdown begin! I for one, am just a bit excited about the prospect of this class, have been reading through the forums quite a bit and really appreciate all the blogs and pictures that LHBA members have contributed. I'll be ready to trade this Seattle rain for a few days of Vegas sun as well :)

:) I remember the last month before class!! time seemed to go by sooooo sloooly!
there were a few things we wished we'd boned up on before class while we were waiting (DIY excavation, DIY footers and frost walls (and ICF!), DIY plumbing and electric)
might help pass the time?

Yes. There are two classes to be held on consecutive weekends in Feb. The next class after that looks to be Memorial Day weekend in May.

No need to change your travel plans :)

Hello fellow 20/21st attendees (as well as you veteran builders)!

Hey NWScott.. send some of that rain down this way will you! I'm expecting I'll start to fry and forget what winter and moisture are like any second now! I'm coming from Tucson Arizona. Unusually cool still for us I'd say and only a few weeks left of 70s before the great BBQ in the sky turns us up to broil.

Anyway, the intro: My name is Glen. I am close enough to Vegas I'm driving in so I can start that dreamer trek of stacking logs in a cool place that doesn't have anything resembling saguaros. For me this is probably a 5-10 year planning for 'retirement' (as much as I'd like to do it today!) I'm currently thinking northern Arizona with a huge pile of solar panels. As a server/networking nerd I can't leave ALL technology behind. If I find the funding, even with the cheaper 'sweat equity', my ideal place is going to be an old school outside cabin look with 2015 guts inside to some degree.

Good to see people are already diving in. See you all in a month!

Aside from slippers, any other things the old-timers recommend I should bring to class?

Do they have an ample supply of coffee? I'm a coffee based life-form.

Hi, I'm Charlie. I've been lurking in these forums for a few months, and then about a month ago one night I had a dream about building a log cabin, so I signed up and snatched one of the last spots left for the Feb 20-21 class. I've looked at other building methods too (cob, strawbale, etc), but books and workshops about those will leave you high and dry when it comes time to build the foundation, roof, plumbing, electric, everything that isn't the wall itself. They all say "hire it out". Plus the more I read about cob and strawbale, the trickier it seemed to "do it the right way". Heck I even looked at yurts for a while. Then I found LHBA.

Anyway, I'm currently in the process of looking for land. I live in Virginia near the Blue Ridge mountains. :)

Forgot to mention, I'm gonna be the crazy guy staying in a hostel for $15 a night, that's how much of a cheapskate I am. Gonna ride a bike to class - google maps says it's a half hour bike ride to the class's hotel. It'll be good to get some exercise after sitting down all day.

Kudos on saving money with the hostel and bike! You'll fit right in.

Warning: Thread hijack attempt

A friend and I were talking a while back and he said he'd just seen the movie, Hostile. He really didn't like it, he said, because it was way too violent. I thought to myself, "Well, what did you expect? The very title is Hostile."

It wasn't until years later when I saw the movie that I realized he didn't say, "Hostile". He said, "Hostel". For the rest of my life, I will think of that story when I see or hear the word "hostel".

Hostel is a great movie. I've been to hostels in Bratislava. I would not be surprised if that actually happens in Bratislava.

If I read this thread right - there may be a feb 20 spot left? i was maybe thinking of May session - but Feb might be better.

Looking forward to the class on the 19th & 20th. Anyone from Missouri signed up for this class? Wife is coming with me (she's on the fence on this...says she is not sure I can do it) Hopefully class will convince her otherwise. So if you meet us give her a gentle nudge in the right direction. See you there.

Of course you can. Maybe not as fast as some people, but likely faster than others. Residential construction isn't rocket science.
I'll be in Vegas for the 13-14 class, my wife will be there but not attending class (language issues) but she has no doubt about me being able to build our home..and I promise you we have obstacles that you won't have to deal with! ;)

No, I'm the one with the potty mouth.
She's still working on her English. Conversationally she's mostly good to go, but as this will be moving into the technical <snicker> she'd spend an awful lot of time asking " what does that mean?".

Now if you taught the class in Thai or Laotian she'd be fine.

Obviously you weren't sitting close enough to see Steve's face;)

I kid, I kid.
Steve rolled with the questions in our class just fine, but you could see that they were questions that had been asked thousands of times before...and %90 would have been answered if the questioner had waited 5-10 more minutes (and I was guilty of that myself).

You're right though ...the class is worth every penny.

We haven't started putting logs up just yet....too freezing to pour the basement (woke up to 4 inches of snow). We did, however, stop by a logging operation on the way home from Vegas to source some logs. The logger told me I was 'picky'.....odd....

Keep at it and you'll find a logger who is "hungry". That guy/gal will go out of his/her way to work around your "pickiness".

There are plenty of folks out there who cut down trees for a living. You don't have to settle for some clown who is making a living with a good contract and does not want to be bothered. Keep looking and you will find some clown who wants to be bothered. He/she will still shake their head and mutter "goofball" under their breath as soon as you leave, but they will take the check and spend it at the company where I work. Everyone wins!!!

PS... Discaimer... I work at a place that sells muffins and all loggers eat a lot of muffins. Please don't think that I am suggesting that you must select a logger who eats a lot of muffins.... That would be advertising on the forum and and would be breaking rules #6, #9, #12, #24, and #6 (again) of the LHBA forum contract. Just pick a logger who is hungry and we'll both come out on top.

Also PS... I try to be gender neutral in all things other than picking a mate. I chose my mate so long ago that you may as well say that I am 100% gender neutral. I say "she/he" when I refer to loggers that you may speak with, but we all know that most women are too darned smart to cut trees down for a living. Without being genderist, I would suggest that 99% of the women who want to cut down trees for a living, capture and Marry some clown who cuts them down and they invest any profits in my Muffin store and everyone wins.... again.

So, I type "he/she" but I really mean "SHE" but most women know they can trust the logger in their life to talk with you, the LHBA member, so you will most likely be talking with the Man of the house.... Instead of the BOSS.
