Sourcing logs has been a challenge thus far. We finally found an independent logger that will deliver a truck load for around $1300. It appears we'll need to take delivery in the next few weeks, however, and we're not able to start building until June 1st. If we wait until spring, we may not be able to get the logs. How can we store the logs so they won't be damaged through the winter?

Where are you?
I imagine storing them over the winter in Maine would be different that storing them over the winter in Florida.

Great price! They'll be fine if you get them on sacrificial logs and don't have a lot of weeds growing up. Sunnier spot helps too.
What species?

$1300 for a load - great price. I would get at least 3 loads maybe 4 or 5 depending....
I bought 2 truck loads but there were all perfect. For example if there 12 inch logs by 40 foot, and you are building a 35 by 35 Then there will be about 21 logs on a truck. I bought 10 and 11 with several 12's and the limit was 25 logs. I needed 63 logs. I had 22 logs from my own property/
So we need more information to give better advise...
Bottom line - get as many loads as you can at that price.
Keep them off the ground... I would paint the ends with latex paint... then number them and measure them getting ready to peel and stack them...

Did you already take the class?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes, I attended the class with my dad. We're in Arizona and the cabin will be built in the Heber/overgaard area. The independent logger is cutting ponderosa pine - green wood. We are headed up to see the timbers tomorrow and hopefully designate which trees we're interested in.

Ah, great. Write the admins for member status, and then you can access the members' side and read up on borate treatments for those logs. You're missing a lot now.

Yeah, I did that today so hopefully I'll have access tomorrow. Thanks!

Herber Ariz. Been through there many times. Great High dry country. Elk are all over the place. Insure that the log don't dry out or the bark will be difficult. There have been several fires in that area in the past several years.
good luck

You're so lucky you're in Navajo County. You should have about 5% of the headaches I had with Yavapai County.

If I had only 5% of your Yavapai County headaches, I'd be homicidal/suicidal.
I must admit, Bo, that you are much, MUCH, MUCH more forgiving than I am.
tjbdjb,
Are you still around? Did you get logs last fall? What's your schedule for this summer?
