Natural Cracking and bugs

Now if this is covered in the class that I have yet to attend I don't want to ask for any specific answers, but everyone I talk to has reasons why not to build a log house. Most relate to kit houses, but one friend actually has family with a "real" log house (still not done by Skips method from the sounds of it) but not a kit either. Biggest problem they had was from the natural cracking (splitting, checking) of the logs and then bug entry from flies and other crawly things. This is in western Montana in ski country. I am in eastern ND and bugs seem to be a problem in almost any house right anyway, but am looking for the best way to improve my chances of keeping them out.

The most discussed is the use of Borax and boric acid treatments to control insects. (not entirely certain, but I think a side benefit of borates is it's a fire retardant)
