Has anyone built in Alaska? I'm curious if state rules and regulations are tough. Looking in the Fairbanks area, possibly.

We built in Homer about 3 years ago. Homer does not have a building inspector so there aren't any building codes in our town except for the road permit and the septic permit (which has to be DEC approved.) The problem that does come up is when you get ready to sell, the banks require a building inspection and if the house does not meet code, they won't lend money for it. We built to code anyway because we enrolled in the state 5 star energy program in which you have to pass 5 inspections along the way but when completed, they give you $7500 plus your home is very energy efficient. Good luck, Alaska235

completely depends where you are, some places will have inspectors, some wont. find the county you want to build in and call their office.

Hi,
The permanent frost is quite difficult to deal with and to my knowledge that many homes out on Badger Rd do not have plumbing due to the permanent frost........

I'm looking to build in Juneau. While isolated and seemingly remote, I anticipate a tall order of regulation to wade through due to being in "The Capitol City." I dream of the "Last Frontier" but every where I turn around here it seems more like "The last National Park." Roll..... I am learning, however, that with this crowd (LHBA) nothing is a deal killer and one way or another you can get it done. You just have to keep your eyes on the prize. I am still in the baby stages with this whole thing. I spend my free time looking for realestate, looking for tools on craigslist, and reading this forum. I have a big fat binder full of log house Ideas, tips and notes I've written down as I study the forum, the blogs and the personal documentries of members who are building. I carry the thing everywhere I go. I think there is a lot of power in writing your goals down. Most everything challenging thing I have acomplished started out first as a list that I made and just kept carrying around in my pocket. I look at it often and work on it and pretty soon its done. I can't wait for the day I get to go to the class.

We can't wait either. Get to class so we can get you over to the member's side and pester you at full force. You won't be disappointed with the change it'll make in how you go about this thing.

Hello ! We just joint the community an will be at LV for February 2015 seminar. Currently from (and "trapped in" ) Vancouver BC Canada, but have been dreaming of the "Last Frontier" since moving to Canada almost 20 years ago . Got finally our property up in Northern BC and getting ready to build our log home up there (wood available is mostly white spruce). My husband is a woodworker, so we hope that the class will tune up his (and mine) skills.

Hello Tanzilla, do you mind if i ask, where in northern BC you folks are going to build.
I live up in the Peace River country, Tumbler Ridge to be exact, and I am pumped up about this Butt and Pass method of building.
If you folks were close,I could probably lend a hand and learn some thing in the process..Cheers and good luck.

Hello Eric ! We will build in Dease Lake; if we would be closer to your place (at Tumbler Ridge), we could definitely get together
to help each other. Will probably start this coming summer (getting logs ready) and then keep
building as time will permit :)
