We are preparing to move into our camper while we build our home. I have been lurking around this site for almost a year and have tried to absorb all the information I can. Due to my husbands work/travel schedule we will not be able to take the class. I am not concerned about the actual build of our home, especially once we take the course, what I am worried about is where will I find my logs/timber. Our property does not have timber to build a house. Can any one in Texas point me in a direction to buy logs? While I am waiting to take the class I want to continue planning and budgeting. We are going to be building by way of pay as you go.
Thanks
James & Gina

how fun. what an exciting time!!
class will give a lot of great suggestions on where to find logs.
too after you've taking the class, you'll have access to the member's side of these forums where we share a lot of great info, like who we got our logs from :)

welcome aboard. enjoy your build!!

It is hard sitting and not doing anything, but don't buy logs or do pretty much anything before taking the class.
It is pretty hard to budget and plan without knowing what you need and how to do it.
Hopefully the anticipation doesn't kill you.

Thanks yall....I am so excited and yes anxious!! I feel like we have been planning for so long that now that we have pulled the trigger that it is going to take FOREVER!! We are doing this because my husband just turned 50 and we are starting to think about retirement. One thing we know is that we do not want to have a mortgage when we are retired. At the same time we have talked abut building our own house for YEARS....Now that we have taken the first step I just want it to happen...I am ready to get started. Can you answer me this? I know I have read on here that this is the least expensive way to build, but does that stand true if you end up having to buy your logs?

One more question..Will the class go over anything beyond the logs, like plumbing, electric, septic, etc?

This'll sound crazy, and you won't believe it can work this way, but you'll learn very little about septic, plumbing, and electrical in class and yet you'll leave knowing that you can get er done. There are several $900 tips about plumbing and electrical that will pay for class all by themselves, but mostly you somehow get the notion that the log home will happen, and you'll take every step one step at a time and be able to make it legal and liveable. As you are building you will be on the members side of this forum and when you have a hard time figuring something out, you'll either read how three other people did it or you'll ask and three of us will respond.

50 years old is not too old. You can either do it slow and leisurely like I am or you can blast it out and get in it for your rocking chair days. It doesn't matter one way or the other. You are too darned old to start this process when you were younger and if you wait too long you'll die before you start. I say take the class as soon as you can and trust that you won't feel cheated.

As for logs in Texas... You'll find them. It's been done before and it'll be done again. Even up here in big timber country most folks buy logs and pay someone to log them. It's still the cheapest way I know to build a log home that will be around for your Grandkids to brag about. You'll notice nobody is coming on here and saying you shouldn't do it.

PS... I am a nobody who is slowly building a very cool log house. No connection to the school except as a student, and I make no money, no how, from your decision. Good luck.

jkgge,

Why don't you pm "fireman9." He probably isn't building in your neighborhood, but he did find logs. I know he would be delighted to share info with you.

One thing you don't want to do is jump the gun and go out and buy logs before the rest of the ducks are in a row. Better to get the logs closer to the time when you are ready for them. Class, class, class, asap

GOSH! I love it when a plan comes together! lololol Seeing a cabin up close so you can really put your hand on it helps doesn't it! Put without the class you will be lost. Please, do not make any big purchases or decisions until you take the class. Stuff that seems logical now may fade in the light of the class.
