I am from West Virginia right on the WV/Ohio border. I was wondering what species of logs people who have built in this area have used. And also any problems they might have had trying to use a specific species. The area I am in is mostly oak (white and red), hickory, walnut and poplar. I would think that the hickory would be quite a work out cause of its toughness. There is some pine also, just not sure what kind of pine it is.

Smug, we built one in pt. Pleasant wv out of white Oak. Did one in Marlinton wv out of white pine. Poplar would work to with precautions. Hickory if winter cut won't peel, ever. And could be used with the bark on. Depending on the species of hickory

I am not real far from Pt. Pleasant. I also bear hunt near Marlinton, lots of big timber down that way. How was the white oak to build with? And have you heard of anyone using red oak?
