Vacation in Greece... Back home to the States... LHBA class in Vegas.... All that and you're young and handsome too?

So why I thankful all day yesterday? My life is a disaster!

Welcome home Gary!

Haha yes. I was fortunate to have someone lend me there home in a small village, on one of the Greek islands. Very great and memorable experience. The class is actually my birthday present since my birthday is 2 days after the class. May have to stay in Vegas and celebrate. Young, handsome is debateable, and single. I would like to get the building underway before some woman comes in and tries changing things. I know that may be a good thing, but I can let them decorate once its built in the future.

Also, anyone in the North Carolina area that is building or plans to build, let me know. I would love to check things out.

First, let me say Thanks for your service.

Second, you are obviously young. Smile. I can't imagine doing this without my/a wife. Life is so much better when we have them in our lives. Sharing the experience is a huge part of it.

Glad you're joining the family.

Edkemper is correct on the wife issue, HOWEVER, there are times when we don't agree on design, etc. and can be frustrating so you have an advantage there. But if I were single the house would be a lot smaller and simpler. Much of what I want to do is to make it nice for her and maybe she will keep me around after I don't spend much time with her for the build. I like to share my dream log house with her so it makes it more enjoyable.
So just build it how you like with an added person in mind later, heck, the cabin may be the icing on the cake to snag a good woman! (after the good looks and young vibrant personality of course.

I have this being built in NC, and I'm not to far from NC, depending on where you are

Unless your avatar is a photo of your grandson, you are young and handsome compared to some of us (me).

As for your worries about a woman messing up your build... Let me assure you that the right woman won't be a problem at all in your build. She may force you to do everything her way but as long as her way is right, you'll be fine.

PS... Her way will be the right way. Fight it all you want but you won't win if you're smart.

The log mahal is being built as cash and time allows, it's been sitting since around June.

I am about 30 minutes west of Charlotte, but I am willing to take a small trip to see some builds.

rckclmbr, Where is the house you are building in NC?

And as far as a wife goes, I by no means was saying that I would be better off without one. I just don't want to give in to one saying she doesn't like this or that, when it was apart of my original plans. I was taught early on that the women are going to be right. I'll be in enough trouble with hunting and fishing. If I can have a nice log home ready for them, then maybe it will make up for the crazy things I do later. i.e. Garage/man cave

My dad is from outside of Asheville. We go up there a lot to see his old friends. Love it up there!

Be careful there, some of the gals are the ones on the forum.
In our process, he makes me be the boss. I have been playing with design for 40 years and he doesn't want to think about it. He also hates computers so I get to do the reading on here and ask the questions. When I get to far out there he reigns me in. BTW grew up 20 miles from Asheville in Clyde, building in Cherokee County. Welcome to the family. Be safe coming home.

And some of us gals have been dreaming about a garage workshop for years, but will probably never get one because we're not married to a cave man...

My Wife is married to a cave man and she don't care a whit about garages or workshops.

When Jake moved out I wanted to turn his old bedroom into a showplace for my sandpaper collection. SHE turned it into a scrapbook room.

I suppose a guy has to compromise.

Haha, ok before I say anything else to get me in to a future doghouse, I will say that it would be amazing to find a lady that would share in this experience with me. Typically, they are more consumed with shopping and getting nails done. If I happen to stumble on a good one, I won't let her go. I may even let her help out.

Mosseyme, you are in dangerous territory for me. Way to close to the trout streams. I would never get anything done. My dad is from the Mars Hill area, which is north of Asheville. However, we are your way a lot.

As does a gal. Living with someone else will always mean compromise, on BOTH sides. Sorry, LHN, but you asked for it ;)

OK Gary, make a lesson out of this one and learn all you can. Once you find the right gal and settle down, she will own half of everything you've got and you'll have to learn how to compromise on BOTH sides.

Oh, and another thing... Tone down a bit on that "shopping and getting her nails done" talk. There'll be no genderist/sexist talk on this forum as long as my Wife reads it.

How'd I do, Bo?

That's correct, you "most likely" wouldn't want that kind of woman

OK,
So after you take the class, when you come to help, we will let you have a 1/2 day break. Trout stream is 2 miles down the road. On junior something day the guys bring their 2 year olds out for a chance to fish. You can hardly get down the road for all the trucks. Also Tellico River in TN is just over the hill a bit and they have a whole fishing village.

Sarah:
Dito on the work shop. He did give me a very nice Delta Industrial unisaw for my birthday a few years back. Sure makes a mess all over everything in the garage though. Specially his Bike when I forget to cover it. Ha.

Hah! I got a nice saw for my birthday also. So far he hasn't noticed the mess, since we haven't put a floor in the basement yet. Too bad we don't live closer, or we could build us a communal workshop -- now there's an idea!:D

You could certainly do that. However, I'll bet you the cost of a cup of coffee that what it'd cost you to take the time off and the cost of the class would be recouped a hundred times over when building "after taking the class."

I doubt you'd find anyone here that didn't take the class and built one of our homes at a reasonable cost. But I'm just guessing.

Besides, with the class you get us. Members are the real benefit to going to class. Well, that and meeting Steve and E in person.

How about a short leave of absence. Or you could do what I'm going to do. Catch the flu!

I thought about that already.., lol . I just used 28 sick days in sept due to a torn tendon in my knee. If I don't use a sick day for 6 months I get those days back. We also have to take a physical , stress test and a battery of other tests and a complete doctors release to come back to work if we miss more than 3 days in a row. They don't like us missing work. I actually working in the freezing rain with a full blown case of the flu right now. I get 1 week a month off and so far I've missed the class every time. It hasn't been that big of a deal since I had so much land clearing to do but I'm almost finished and now it's time to get working on the house ..

WAIT A MINUTE!!! You had us all feeling sorry for poor ole Project! Now you tell us that you had a chance to torque your knee and go to class on crutches, but you decided to do it in September, instead of at the time of a regularly scheduled class??!!!

Pay attention whenever you are twisting, bending, lifting, falling, or jumping. Timing is crucial. Plan ahead. One thing you'll learn in class is to use your tools (sick leave is a tool). You'd best get this thing figured out and get to class before you decide you like that job so much that you end up living in a trailer house for the rest of your life.

Advice from a worn out old frat. Use or ignore it how you will.

Haha. If it keeps up like this I might just have to quit to take the class but it would be worth it.

I just took the class in November, I planned on the one in the spring but couldn't make it work. when I saw that you should take the class 2 years prior to building, I made it a priority to go because I wanted to know what I was up against and get moving so I didn't waste another 10 years without moving forward. Financially, I am not able to "really" get started (and pay for the class), however, the class gave me so much clarity that I am finding ways of making the money for the materials I need. Just Do It!!!
