Im totally new here, but have been reading quite a bit. And a common thing Ive noticed is coloring your cement chinking. Could one use tile grout that is already colored for the chinking?

You clearly have not looked at mine! I would show you a picture but this stupid tap talk requires me to log in. Any way google flintlock1 and photobucket and you can see tan chinking. There are many ways to color gray or white cement as well as using synthetics to mask or color chinking.
My color is after the really old log homes that I have seen.

Ok I figured it out. It's tough getting old.

Any way, I'm sitting on my couch and see the chinking.

I really like that compared to the standard mortar.

Could thinset mortar be used, you an get it with flex additives and latex to promote adhesion to wood.

Good luck getting the thinset to stay up. Far too much slump.

If you use white portland you can get whiter chinking if you like that look.

Thanks,
Actually the stain on the outside of the house really makes it look brighter. Against the unstained interior walls it has a creamier look to it. Like this.

Looks to me like the stove is sitting on some type of stone, with wood storage underneath. It's got to be pretty stout, stable and fireproof, whatever it is.

Blane what did you use for chinking, that looks really good.

As you can see there are many choices to color or shade your chinking.

My stove is coated with a fireproof type of cement board. It is major stout because the stove weighs about 350 pounds. I intended to tile it but just haven't found the time. Many other things are more important. I stole the idea from Pam.
