I need to build a new well house but I don't have any small pines for logs but I'm covered in hickory. I have a couple of hundred small hickory, 6" to 8" that I'm taking out anyways. The well house is only going to be a 14'x14' which is why I need the smaller logs. Has anyone ever tried to debark green hickory?? I thought about letting it dry a few months and loosen up.

"Dry" rarely associates itself to easy peeling.

At first I was thinking about letting them dry until the bark became loose but I think hickory wood become too hard to work with at that point

Hmm. How 'bout building green with the bark on? Then wait for it to come loose, (might take quite a while) then peel & chink?

That's an option. I cut about 40 down over the weekend and stacked them out to air dry. Ill see how long it takes for the bark to come loose.

It wouldn't surprise me if it took a year. I have a bunch of maple and cherry down for about nine months now, and it isn't willing to give up it's bark yet.

I'm wondering why a 14x14 has to be built with small logs.

It doesn't have to be built out of small logs, I was wanting to use what I had and was cutting down already . The only pines I have are around 14" and reserved for my house.

Hickory peels really easy when its fresh. It's a nightmare a few weeks after cutting.

I'm going to cut some down in a couple in a couple of weeks and try it.

It's better to debarked knotless hickory with a bandsaw, when all else fails. These is the thing which I do or you can drawknife it off.
